Porto — an easy city, with one variable upriver

In the city, there is nothing to solve

Porto's historic centre is well covered. Ribeira, the Dom Luís I Bridge, the riverfront on both banks — signal is fine throughout, wifi is everywhere it usually is in Portugal, and no part of the city is a coverage problem worth planning around.

So this page is not going to invent one. If you are staying in Porto and not leaving it, buy whatever the Portugal hub points you at and stop thinking about it.

The reason to read on is that most people do leave it.

The Douro is the actual variable

The wine valley is the main day trip from Porto, taken either by car or by river cruise, and the two behave differently.

By road, the picture is good: the N108 runs along the river and holds signal along its length. By boat, some upstream stretches reduce signal. That matters more than the equivalent gap on a road would, because a Douro cruise is a fixed multi-hour commitment on a vessel you cannot get off. If your return train times, your quinta booking or your address for the evening live in a browser tab, load them before you board.

It is a small piece of preparation and it is the only genuinely Porto-specific thing on this page. Do it, and the valley stops being a connectivity question at all.

Getting in from the airport is the easy part

The Metro's Violeta line runs from the airport to Trindade in about forty minutes, and the Andante card covers Metro and bus. The card is a tap-in product, so you do not need data to travel — which means there is no reason to panic-buy connectivity in arrivals.

If you do want a physical SIM, though, Porto Francisco Sá Carneiro is the least painful place in Portugal to get one. NOS and MEO both sell in arrivals, peak queues run about eight minutes and off-peak about three, and Portugal requires no ID for a prepaid purchase — so it is a payment and a walk-out rather than a passport check and a form. A generic airport tourist package costs around $15, which is the price of the convenience rather than good value.

The airport also has free wifi throughout, so you can land, get online and decide later.

São João, 23 and 24 June

Porto's São João is one of the better street festivals in Europe — plastic hammers, sardines, leeks and dancing in the street, city-wide and genuinely local rather than staged for visitors.

Network congestion in the historic centre on São João evening is significant, though manageable. Treat it the way you would any dense crowd: agree a meeting point rather than relying on finding each other by phone, and save your route back before the evening starts.

What to buy for a Porto trip

Most visits here are three to five days, often with one of them in the Douro, which puts you on the short rungs of the ladder rather than the monthly ones.

Airalo's verified prices, read from its own checkout on 13 August 2026, put 3 GB over seven days at $6.50 and 5 GB over seven days at $7.50. For a week that includes a valley trip and a lot of photographs, 10 GB over fifteen days is $10.50. Saily's Portugal prices are verified too, read from its own site on 16 August, and its shape is different rather than cheaper: 1 GB over seven days for $3.99, then 3 GB over thirty days for $7.99 — useful if your week is light and long, more expensive than Airalo at every size above that. Worth naming the trap at the other end: Portugal's ladder runs all the way to a verified 50 GB for $35.00 over thirty days, which at $0.70 a gigabyte is the best rate in the country. That is the right buy if you are working here for a month. It is entirely the wrong buy for a long weekend, and the duration is what makes the difference, not the allowance.

And if your phone contract is an EU or EEA one, none of this applies — you roam here on your domestic allowance and should buy nothing.
