Latvia's cheapest verified eSIM rate is $0.84 a gigabyte, and an EU plan already gets you the same data for nothing

An EU or EEA plan already covers Latvia

Latvia is an EU member state, so roam-like-at-home applies: a mobile plan issued in any EU or EEA country works in Latvia at your usual domestic rates, with no roaming surcharge. If you are travelling from Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Germany, Sweden or anywhere else inside that zone, the correct advice is to buy nothing at all. Switch data roaming on and check one thing only — your operator's fair-use roaming allowance, which is often lower than your data at home.

That belongs at the top rather than in a footnote: for many readers it is the entire answer. A travel eSIM is worth money in Latvia if your plan comes from the United States, Canada, Australia or Asia, or if you are British and your operator reintroduced European roaming charges after Brexit — that varies by network, so check your own tariff.

One provider, eighteen prices, one date

Airalo sells its Latvian plans under the name Labitel. That is Airalo's own retail product name and not a carrier. Airalo publishes no host network for Latvia — it publishes none anywhere — so which Latvian operator your phone actually attaches to is not something we can tell you.

The metered ladder

Why $0.84 and not $3

The price of a country on Airalo tracks one thing more closely than anything else: how far its ladder goes. Latvia runs to 50 GB over 30 days, and markets with a 50 GB rung land near a dollar a gigabyte. Markets that stop at 20 GB sit at $2 to $3, and the ones that stop at 10 GB — Kenya, Nigeria, Fiji — run $4.60 to $4.70 a gigabyte. The small plans are priced much the same across all of them. It is the presence or absence of a big plan that decides whether a country looks cheap.

Inside Latvia the same gradient runs top to bottom. The 1 GB plan is $4 a gigabyte and the 50 GB plan $0.84, a difference of nearly five times from the same seller on the same morning, decided entirely by which row you clicked.

Latvia and Lithuania are priced almost as one market

We wrote both countries from the same day's data, and the overlap is too close to be coincidence. Latvia and Lithuania share the identical 1 GB plan, the identical 3 GB plans at both durations, four of the six unlimited plans, and the identical 50 GB plan at $42. Both floor at $0.84 a gigabyte.

Where they part is the middle of the ladder. Lithuania's 5 GB, 10 GB and 20 GB plans each cost a dollar to two and a half dollars more than the Latvian equivalents, which makes Latvia the cheaper of the two for any trip that does not want 50 GB. That is a real difference and worth acting on, but it is a difference in the middle rungs, not two independently priced countries.

Cyprus, meanwhile, floors at $0.72 a gigabyte and Estonia at $0.98, so the four cheap EU markets we added this month sit within about a quarter of each other. For scale, the best European rates on this site are Austria at $0.58 a gigabyte and Belgium at $0.65.

Unlimited is the worse buy here

Airalo lists six unlimited plans in Latvia: $11.50 for 3 days, $18 for 5, $27 for 7, $35 for 10, $48 for 15 and $69 for 30. The comparison that matters is at the long end and it is not close. Fifteen days of unlimited is $48; the 50 GB plan is $42 and runs for 30 days. You would be paying $6 more for half the window, so unless you plan to exceed 50 GB in a fortnight the metered plan wins outright.

Short trips are the exception. Unlimited for 3 days at $11.50 is $4 more than 3 GB over the same three days, which is a fair premium for never checking your usage.

Which plan to buy

• A weekend in Riga. 3 GB over 3 days at $7.50, or unlimited at $11.50.
• A week. 10 GB over 7 days at $17, or $17.50 for the 15-day version if your dates are loose.
• Two weeks. 20 GB over 15 days at $27.
• A month, or a phone feeding a laptop. 50 GB over 30 days at $42 — the only Latvian plan we hold that comes in under a dollar a gigabyte.

What this page does not cover
