Malaysia and Taiwan share a $1.39 floor, then diverge in the middle of the ladder
The same $69.50 buys 50 GB in Malaysia as in Taiwan, but 20 GB costs $44 here against $40 there. Eighteen verified prices from the one seller we hold, all read on 17 August 2026.
What we actually hold for Malaysia
One provider: Airalo. Eighteen plans, all eighteen verified, read off airalo.com on 17 August 2026. That is everything, and it is deliberately not dressed up as a market survey. Saily, Holafly, Nomad, eSIMCard and eSIM Go are all absent from this page for the same reason — nobody here has read their Malaysian prices, so quoting one would be making it up. They may well undercut the figures below. We do not know, and a page that pretends to know is worth less than one that says so.
Airalo lists its Malaysian plans as Sambungkan. That is a product name Airalo has given its own eSIM, not a network: Airalo does not publish which Malaysian operator its plans roam onto, here or in any other country it sells in. If you need to know which network you are on — for coverage in the interior of Sarawak, say — no eSIM we hold can promise you one.

Six unlimited plans sit alongside those: $16.50 for 3 days, $27 for 5, $38.50 for 7, $49 for 10, $69 for 15 and $101 for 30.
The metered ladder runs from 1 GB to 50 GB with nothing above it, and the spread inside that range is the thing to notice. The 1 GB plan works out at $6.00 a gigabyte; the 50 GB plan at $1.39. That is a 4.3-fold gap between the top and the bottom of one seller's own list, on one day, in one country.
Where Malaysia and Taiwan part company
We priced both countries on the same day, from the same seller, which makes the comparison unusually clean. They are identical at three sizes and different at two:

Malaysia is $1.50 cheaper at 3 GB, $2 dearer at 10 GB and $4 dearer at 20 GB, and the two countries meet exactly at the top and bottom of the ladder. The practical consequence is small but real: the middle tiers, which are what most two-week travellers buy, cost more here.
The one place unlimited wins
In most countries the biggest metered plan holds the lowest rate and unlimited is a luxury. Malaysia has a wrinkle. The 15-day unlimited plan is $69, fifty cents below the 50 GB plan at $69.50 — so if you want a fortnight rather than a month, unlimited is the cheaper listing outright, with no data ceiling to watch.
Two other coincidences are worth knowing before you pick. The 3-day unlimited is $16.50, exactly what 5 GB over 15 days costs; and the 5-day unlimited is $27, exactly what 10 GB over 7 days costs. In both pairs you are choosing between a longer window with a data cap and a shorter one without. Neither is obviously right — it depends whether you are more likely to run out of days or gigabytes.
Which tier for which trip
- Two or three days, light use. 3 GB over 3 days at $11.00. If you would rather not ration, the 3-day unlimited is $16.50.
- A week in Kuala Lumpur with wifi most evenings. 5 GB over 7 days at $16.00. Stepping up to 10 GB over 7 days costs $27.00, which buys the extra five gigabytes at $2.20 each — worse value than the step from 10 GB to 20 GB.
- A fortnight moving around. 20 GB over 15 days at $44.00, or the 15-day unlimited at $69 if you are tethering.
- A month, or two phones sharing. 50 GB over 30 days at $69.50. Nothing else we hold for Malaysia comes under $2 a gigabyte.
How Malaysia reads against the rest of the site
Badly, is the short answer. $1.39 a gigabyte is more than double Airalo's own Thai floor: its 50 GB plan there was $27.50 on 13 August, or $0.55 a gigabyte. Its Austrian 50 GB plan was $29 the same day. Malaysia's is $69.50. That is the same company, the same size of plan, within a week — and the reason we quote dates on every figure.

Which network will my eSIM use in Malaysia?
Airalo does not publish it, for Malaysia or anywhere else. Sambungkan is the name Airalo puts on its own Malaysian eSIM, not the name of an operator, so it is not a clue either. If knowing your network matters — remote coverage, for instance — an eSIM from our data cannot answer it.
Is the unlimited plan better value than 50 GB in Malaysia?
Over a fortnight, yes. The 15-day unlimited is $69 against $69.50 for 50 GB over 30 days, so you pay fifty cents less and lose no data allowance, but you lose half the window. Over a month the metered plan wins easily: 50 GB is $69.50 and the 30-day unlimited is $101.
Why is Malaysia dearer than Thailand for the same plan?
We only know that it is. Airalo sells 50 GB over 30 days for $69.50 in Malaysia and sold the same size for $27.50 in Thailand on 13 August. Airalo does not explain its per-country pricing, and inventing a reason would undercut the point of publishing the checked figures in the first place.
