Does your phone support eSIM?

The rule, in one line

eSIM is hardware. A phone either shipped with the chip or it didn't, and no update, jailbreak or carrier setting can add it later. That single fact answers most of the questions people arrive here with.

Apple

Apple added eSIM in 2018 with the iPhone XR, XS and XS Max. Everything from that generation forward supports it. Everything before it — the iPhone X, 8, 7, and the first-generation SE — does not, and never will.

The second thing worth knowing is the 2022 change. Every iPhone 14 and later sold in the United States has no SIM tray at all. There is no physical SIM slot to fall back on, which makes an eSIM your only option on those handsets. The same models sold outside the US kept the tray, so a US iPhone 15 and a European iPhone 15 genuinely behave differently.

Google Pixel

Every Pixel from the Pixel 3 onward supports eSIM. The Pixel 2 technically has the hardware but Google restricted it to Google Fi, so it won't work with a travel eSIM — treat it as unsupported.

Samsung Galaxy

The Galaxy S20 was the first S-series with eSIM, and everything since supports it. The Note 20 line, and every Z Fold and Z Flip, support it too.

The A-series is messier and worth checking rather than assuming. The A54, A55 and A56 support eSIM. The A3x line varies by market. The A2x and below generally don't have it at all.

Two regional traps: Samsung handsets sold in mainland China have eSIM disabled, and some older carrier-locked US models restrict eSIM to that carrier's own profiles.

The definitive test

Any list, including this one, lags new releases and misses regional variants. If you want certainty in ten seconds, check the phone itself:

• iPhone — Settings → Mobile Data (or Cellular). If you see Add eSIM or Add Data Plan, you have it.
• Android — Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs. Look for Download a SIM instead? or an Add eSIM option.
• Either — dial *#06#. If an EID number appears alongside the IMEI, the handset has eSIM hardware.

That last one is the most reliable check of the three. An EID is the eSIM's own identifier, and a phone without eSIM hardware has nothing to report.

One more thing: carrier locks

Supporting eSIM and being able to use an eSIM are different questions. A handset still under contract, or locked to a carrier, may refuse a third-party eSIM profile even though the hardware is there. If your phone is financed or was bought subsidised, check that it's unlocked before you buy a travel plan — most carriers will unlock on request once the device is paid off.
