Does the Galaxy Z Fold have eSIM?

Samsung's foldable got there first

Yes — and the Z Fold has a small claim on the history of this. Our device data puts the first Z Fold at 2019. The Galaxy S line did not get eSIM until the S20 in 2020. Samsung's folding phone had the feature before its mainstream flagship did.

Why it landed there first is not something we can tell you. Samsung has never explained the sequencing in anything we can cite, and guessing at a manufacturer's internal reasoning is not the business this site is in. The consequence, though, is useful and checkable: there is no Z Fold generation without eSIM. Every one of them takes a travel profile, and every one keeps a physical SIM tray as well.

The device this feature suits

A Fold is disproportionately likely to be somebody's work phone and personal phone at once. That is the use case dual SIM was designed for, and it changes what the travel eSIM is competing with.

If you already run two numbers — a work line and a personal one — adding a travel data plan means running a third identity on one device. That works: the handset stores multiple eSIM profiles and lets you switch between them, with a limited number active at any moment. Samsung does not publish a figure we will quote, so verify the ceiling on your own device rather than trusting a number off a forum.

The configuration most people land on: personal number in the tray for calls, work eSIM profile still installed but switched off for the trip, travel eSIM active and set as the data line. Two weeks later you reverse it.

The mainland China caveat, honestly stated

Samsung disables eSIM on handsets sold in mainland China. Our data file records that note against the S-series entries but not against the Z Fold, and we are not going to pretend that difference is meaningful evidence either way — it is the absence of a note, not a tested exception.

So treat it as a Samsung-wide rule and verify your specific handset. Dial *#06#. An EID under the IMEI means the eSIM is live. If you bought your Fold abroad or through an importer, that ten-second check is worth more than any compatibility list, including ours.

What actually stops an eSIM working on a Fold

Three things, in rough order of frequency.

A carrier lock, from a contract or trade-in deal, will make a handset reject third-party profiles while reporting only a generic activation failure. Ask the network that sold it to unlock; most do once it is paid off.

No connection at install time. An eSIM profile has to be downloaded. You need working internet to get the thing that gives you working internet, which is why the install belongs at home on Wi-Fi rather than at baggage reclaim.

A QR code you cannot reach. Save it as an image. Providers email it, and finding an email without data is its own small nightmare.

The verdict

For anyone buying second-hand, the Fold's age range is entirely inside the eSIM era, so you do not need to identify the generation before you can answer — a rarity on Android, where the same question about a mid-range handset can turn into a model-number hunt. Check the EID, check the lock status, and it will do everything a travel plan asks of it.
