Portuguese data is cheap, whichever way you buy it

Portugal is in the EU, so an EU or EEA SIM roams there on your normal domestic allowance under roam-like-at-home. No purchase, no install, no decision. Only a stay long enough to hit your provider's fair-use cap changes that.

The rest of this is for visitors from the UK, the US, Canada, Brazil and everywhere else that pays for the privilege.

What data costs

Portugal is cheap. The floor is $0.70 a gigabyte — Airalo's Fofo Mobil 50 GB for 30 days at $35, read from Airalo's checkout on 13 August 2026. What makes Portugal unusual is that the good rates start much lower down the ladder: the verified 10 GB for 7 days is $10, exactly a dollar a gigabyte, and that is the plan most week-long visitors should buy.

See our eSIMCard page. Nomad's 20 GB month appeared here at $28 before anyone checked it; it is $20, which moves it from the bottom of the 20 GB group to the top. Fofo Mobil is Airalo's product name for its Portuguese plans, not a carrier.

The gap between providers is wider than usual at the same size. Airalo's verified 20 GB is $19 against Nomad's verified $20 and Saily's verified $27.99. On a market this cheap, that Saily price is the difference between a good buy and paying European roaming money for no reason.

The local SIM is a genuine rival here

Portugal is one of the few countries where buying locally is easy: no ID is required at most retail outlets, so it is an over-the-counter purchase rather than a passport-and-form exercise. NOS, MEO and Vodafone prepaid SIMs are sold at Lisbon, Faro and Porto airports and in carrier stores nationwide, and tourist packages run €10–20 for 10–30 GB. Our data has an airport tourist package at around $15.

Per gigabyte, that lands in much the same territory as the cheapest eSIM rather than well below it, so this is not a case where the local SIM obviously wins. It comes down to whether you would rather queue on arrival or arrive connected. What the local SIM does give you is the choice of network, which no eSIM here can offer.

Coverage and which network to want

NOS is the best all-round network, and the strongest for road trips across Portugal, the Algarve coast and Madeira. MEO is equally strong in rural areas. All three major carriers run 5G in Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve, and the national average speed in our data is 50 Mbps.

Gaps worth knowing: the interior of the Alentejo and the mountains of Trás-os-Montes, dead spots on some Algarve cliff walking trails, and the remote Azores — Flores and Corvo in particular have limited coverage. If your trip is Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve towns, none of this will trouble you. Emergency calls work on any Portuguese network without an active plan.

What the old version of this page got wrong

It said Airalo's Portuguese plans cover NOS, Vodafone and MEO — all three. That claim has no source behind it. Airalo does not publish a host network for Portugal, or for any country, and the plans at the top of the table are exactly the ones we cannot tell you the network for.

Some other providers give leads. eSIMCard names NOS and MEO in its own listing, and that is the only lead here. We have not confirmed it with the operators. Saily, Nomad and Holafly belong with Airalo: none of them names a Portuguese carrier anywhere, and earlier versions of this page wrongly listed NOS and MEO against Saily and Nomad and a third network against Holafly. If you specifically want NOS for a Douro or Alentejo road trip, buy a NOS SIM at a counter and ask for it by name — that is the only route that guarantees it, and it is a thirty-second purchase since no ID is needed.

WiFi is excellent nationwide, free and near-universal in airports, hotels, cafes and restaurants, which is another reason a 10 GB plan goes further here than the number suggests.
