Who actually needs to buy something

Faro is the Algarve's arrivals hall, and its traffic is overwhelmingly European. Portugal is in the EU, so if your plan came from anywhere in the EU or EEA — Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Poland — roam-like-at-home applies and there is nothing to buy. Walk past the counter.

The exception is the single largest group landing here. UK arrivals no longer get EU roaming automatically. Some British operators still include it, some charge a daily fee of a few pounds, and a fortnight of those fees adds up to more than any eSIM on this page. Check your own tariff before you fly — that one check is worth more than everything else written here.

What is in arrivals

NOS and Vodafone sell SIMs in Faro arrivals. Portugal requires no ID for a prepaid SIM, so it is an over-the-counter purchase with no registration wait.

The queue is where Faro is unusual. Fifteen minutes at peak, three off-peak — a wide spread for an airport this small, and it reflects how the Algarve works. Charter and low-cost flights arrive in clusters, several hundred people clear the hall at once, and then it is empty. You will either wait a quarter of an hour or walk straight up, with very little in between, and you cannot tell which until you get there.

We hold no opening hours for either counter, and no terminal-level detail. Late-season and late-evening arrivals should not assume a staffed desk.

Is it worth buying there?

Our country data puts a typical Portuguese airport SIM at around $15. That is not a rip-off, but Portugal happens to be one of the better-value eSIM markets we track, so the comparison is unkind to the counter.

These are the Portuguese prices we have read directly from Airalo's own site, sold under the retail name Fofo Mobil:

A week in the Algarve on 5 GB is $7.50, verified — half the typical airport SIM, live before you land, no fifteen-minute queue after a delayed flight. The 50 GB plan at $35 works out at $0.70 per gigabyte, the cheapest rate anywhere in our Portuguese data and among the best in Europe. If you are here for a month or a winter, ignore the small plans entirely.

Cheaper still at the bottom end: Saily's 1 GB for 7 days is $3.99, read off Saily's own site on 16 August 2026, which undercuts Airalo's verified gigabyte by a cent and lasts four days longer. The road-trip problem, and what we can honestly say about it

Most people who fly into Faro rent a car. The Algarve spreads along a coast, the good beaches are down unmarked turnings, and the whole trip runs on Google Maps. So coverage matters more here than it would for a city break.

What we cannot tell you is which network any given eSIM will use. Airalo publishes no host network for Portugal — "Fofo Mobil" is a product name at checkout, not a carrier. Saily and Nomad publish none either, naming no Portuguese carrier anywhere on their sites. Holafly publishes none either — the NOS, MEO and Vodafone Portugal listing this page used to carry against it came from our own data. The carriers our own data carried against eSIMCard's rows here came from this site's generated text rather than from eSIMCard, so we no longer repeat them — it is the only one of the six that publishes a host network at all, so its own listing is the place to look.

The practical answer is the boring one: buying from NOS or Vodafone at the counter is the only way to know whose towers you are on. If that certainty matters to you for a week of driving into the hills behind Monchique, the fifteen minutes may be worth it. For coastal Algarve, where all the Portuguese networks are well built out, it almost certainly is not.

Practical notes

Free WiFi is normally available throughout Faro Airport, which is enough to buy and install an eSIM on arrival if you did not do it before boarding. Public transport and taxis connect the airport to Faro city centre; we hold no fares or journey times, so take those from the signs rather than from us.
