The Algarve: well covered, except on the cliffs

A large share of Algarve visitors should buy nothing

Portugal is in the EU, and the Algarve draws more of its visitors from other EU countries than almost anywhere else on this site. If you are flying in from Dublin, Amsterdam, Frankfurt or Paris on a domestic SIM, roam-like-at-home applies and your normal allowance works here at normal rates. Do not buy a travel plan you do not need.

British visitors are the exception worth flagging, given how many there are here: post-Brexit roaming terms vary by operator and several have brought charges back. Check yours before you assume. Everyone arriving from outside the EU needs something.

The coast itself is not a problem

The Algarve is 150 km of limestone cliff coastline, and it is one of Portugal's best-served regions. All three major carriers — NOS, MEO and Vodafone — run 5G in the Algarve as well as in Lisbon and Porto, and Portugal averages around 50 Mbps. NOS is the strongest network for road trips along this coast, with MEO equally good inland.

For a resort holiday in Albufeira, Lagos or Vilamoura, there is no coverage question to answer. Buy the cheapest plan that covers your dates.

The reason the Algarve still needs its own page is that the good bits are spread over 150 km and car hire is effectively required to see anything beyond the main resorts. That means navigation, and navigation is where the two genuine gaps show up.

Benagil and the cliff-top trails

The Benagil sea cave is the Algarve's most photographed landmark and is reachable only by kayak or boat tour. There is no signal inside the cave. That is not much of a hardship for a twenty-minute visit, but it does mean the tour booking, the meeting point and the operator's phone number want to be on your phone already rather than in a browser tab you were planning to reload at the beach.

The cliff-top walking trails matter more. The Seven Hanging Valleys trail and the paths along the Vicentine Coast have intermittent signal on the exposed headlands — not a total loss, but enough that a live map is unreliable on precisely the sections where the trail runs close to a cliff edge. Download the route before you start. This is the one piece of advice on this page that changes an outcome.

Surf forecasts are the other data habit worth knowing about here. Windguru and Surfline are the standard tools for reading the Atlantic swells around Sagres, and they are worth checking before you drive out rather than after.

What to buy

The Airalo rows were read from Airalo's own site on 13 August 2026 and the Saily rows from Saily's on 16 August. eSIMCard's rows have been withdrawn: we read its own pages on 18 August 2026, found the figures we held were wrong, and could not store the real ones. See our eSIMCard page. Saily's range stops at a verified 20 GB for $27.99, which is $8.99 above Airalo's verified 20 GB — so it competes at the bottom of this table and nowhere near the top.

The arithmetic is unusually good at the top of the ladder. The 50 GB plan at $35 works out at 70 cents a gigabyte, the cheapest rate in our Portuguese data, and even the 10 GB month at $11 is $1.10 a gigabyte — better than the equivalent plan in Ireland or Germany. A two-week self-drive holiday covering the whole coast fits comfortably inside 10 GB at $11.

Buying locally is easy — Portugal requires no ID for a prepaid SIM, so it is an instant purchase — but a typical airport SIM runs about $15, which buys more data as an eSIM bought before you fly.

On networks, one caveat. Airalo, which has the cheapest verified prices here, does not publish which Portuguese carrier its plans connect to; Fofo Mobil is the name it sells them under, not an operator. Saily and Nomad publish nothing either, naming no Portuguese carrier anywhere. Holafly names nothing either — the three-network listing this page used to credit to it came from our own data. eSIMCard names NOS and MEO in its own listing, and that has not been confirmed against the carriers. Given that all three networks cover this coast well, it is not a distinction worth paying much for in the Algarve specifically.
