Funchal and Madeira — the same plans, a different problem

Madeira is Portugal, and that settles most of it

Funchal sits on an Atlantic island a long way off the mainland, and none of that distance reaches your bill. Madeira is Portuguese territory inside the EU, so roam-like-at-home applies exactly as it does in Lisbon. If your contract is an EU or EEA one, you use your domestic allowance here and buy nothing at all.

Everyone else buys an ordinary Portugal plan. There is no Madeira tariff, no island surcharge, and no separate island product to hunt for. So what differs on Madeira is where you go, not what you pay.

The levadas are the entire coverage story

Signal across the island is serviceable — Funchal itself, the Laurissilva UNESCO forest, and the main levada trails that follow the old irrigation channels. The cable cars from Funchal up to Monte and on to the Botanical Garden hold signal the whole ride. The glass skywalk at Cabo Girão, one of Europe's highest sea cliffs at 589 m, has signal at the platform. The Mercado dos Lavradores and the marina are both fine.

The gaps are specific and predictable. The high levadas above 1,000 m — Levada do Rei and Levada das 25 Fontes among them — lose signal on their most remote sections. Those are exactly the walks where losing your map matters, because they are long, narrow and awkward to turn back on.

Download the route before you leave Funchal. AllTrails and WalkMe Madeira both hold maps offline, and a saved route is worth more up there than any amount of paid data.

One thing the island gives you for free: the climate runs 18–25 °C year-round, so there is no seasonal version of this problem. February behaves like August.

Nobody will tell you which network you are on

Across Portugal, NOS is the operator our data rates highest for this kind of travel — road trips, the Algarve coast, and Madeira specifically. MEO is its equal for rural inland routes.

Connecting that to a particular eSIM is where it falls apart. Airalo does not publish a host network for Portugal, or for anywhere else; the "Fofo Mobil" name on its Portuguese plans is a retail package, not a carrier. Saily publishes nothing either — its pages name no Portuguese carrier at all, promising only a reliable connection from the country's best networks. Nomad publishes nothing either, in Portugal or anywhere. Holafly publishes nothing either; the NOS, MEO and Vodafone Portugal listing this page used to carry against it came from our own records. eSIMCard names NOS and MEO in its own listing, which has not been confirmed with the operators, and we treat it as a lead rather than a fact.

The practical consequence is narrow but real. If coverage on a remote levada is genuinely load-bearing — you are walking alone, or someone needs to be able to reach you — choose the network yourself with a local SIM instead of trusting an unlisted one.

Buying in Funchal

Portugal asks for no ID for a prepaid SIM, which makes this a two-minute counter transaction rather than a registration exercise. NOS, MEO and Vodafone all run stores in the city, and a local prepaid line also gives you a Portuguese number, which none of the data-only eSIMs do.

We hold no data on SIM counters at Funchal airport — our Portuguese airport coverage stops at Lisbon, Porto and Faro — so do not land expecting one. Install an eSIM before you fly, or buy in town when it suits you. Wifi here is good enough that there is no urgency either way.

What to actually buy

The longer stays are where Madeira diverges from a normal holiday island. It has become a fixture on the remote-work circuit, and a month of working from Funchal is a different volume of data from a week of walking levadas.
