Buying a SIM card at Porto Airport (OPO)

Most arrivals here should buy nothing

Portugal is in the EU. A plan bought anywhere in the EU or EEA works in Porto on your normal domestic allowance at your normal domestic price under roam-like-at-home. That covers most of the traffic through OPO, and for those people the counters in arrivals are simply not relevant.

UK arrivals are the group who need to check. Post-Brexit, EU roaming from a British plan depends on the operator — included with some, a daily fee with others. A week of daily fees usually costs more than any option below, so look at your tariff before you fly.

What is in arrivals

NOS and MEO sell SIMs in Porto arrivals. That is a slightly different pairing from Lisbon and Faro, where our data records NOS alongside Vodafone Portugal — worth knowing only if you have a preference, and for most visitors it makes no practical difference.

Portugal requires no ID for a prepaid SIM. There is no registration step, no passport scan, no wait for activation — you pay and leave.

Peak queue is around eight minutes; off-peak is three. That is the shortest peak wait of Portugal's three main airports, and it reflects Porto's more even arrival pattern compared with Faro's charter clusters.

We hold no opening hours for the Porto counters. Lisbon's are recorded as closing at 23:00, but we have nothing equivalent for OPO and it would be wrong to assume the same. If you land late, plan as though there may be nothing open.

Is it worth buying there?

Eight minutes is a low enough price in time that the answer comes down to money. Our country data puts a typical Portuguese airport SIM at around $15, and Portugal is one of Europe's cheaper eSIM markets, so the counter loses that comparison.

Here is what we have verified directly on Airalo's own site, sold under the retail name Fofo Mobil:

Four days in Porto and the Douro on 3 GB is $6.50 confirmed. A month is $35 for 50 GB, which is $0.70 per gigabyte — the cheapest rate anywhere in our Portuguese data. Do not read only the small plans and conclude that Portugal is expensive; the opposite is true once you buy in bulk.

Cheaper at the entry level: Saily's 1 GB for 7 days is $3.99, read off Saily's own site on 16 August 2026. Saily's larger plans are the ones to skip — its verified 10 GB month is $16.99 and its 20 GB month $27.99, against Airalo's verified $11 and $19. The full ladder is on our Portugal hub.

On which network you end up using

Buying from NOS or MEO at the counter, you know which network you are on. With a travel eSIM you do not, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

Airalo publishes no host network for Portugal at all — "Fofo Mobil" is a product name at checkout, not a carrier. Saily and Nomad name none either, anywhere on their sites. Holafly names none either. The carriers our own data carried against eSIMCard's rows here came from this site's generated text rather than from eSIMCard, so we no longer repeat them — it is the only one of the six that publishes a host network at all, so its own listing is the place to look.

In Porto itself this barely matters — the city is well served whatever you are on. It becomes a real question if your trip runs up the Douro valley to the quintas, where the terrain is steep and the roads are narrow. If that certainty is what you want, the counter is the only place you get it.

Getting into the city

The Metro's Purple Line runs from the airport into the centre and is the efficient way in. It does require you to navigate — knowing which stop you want and how to change — which is easier with working data than without. Free WiFi is normally available throughout the airport, so you can install an eSIM before you go down to the platform. Taxis also serve the city centre; we hold no fares or journey times for either option.
