Comparing SIM options for Turkey: the usual advice is wrong here

The local SIM is expensive here

In most countries the advice is simple: short trip, buy an eSIM; long trip, buy a local SIM. Turkey breaks that pattern, and it is worth seeing the numbers side by side.

A Turkcell tourist SIM at Istanbul Airport runs around 1,300 TL — roughly $35 — for 20GB of data, 200 minutes and WhatsApp, valid 30 days. City-centre stores are significantly cheaper at around 700 to 900 TL, which at the same exchange rate is somewhere near $19 to $24. Prepaid SIMs at Turkish airports generally sit around the $20 mark. Every one of them requires your passport to register.

Against that, Airalo's verified 20GB for 30 days is $22.50 and its verified 50GB for 30 days is $34.50 — the latter costing about what the airport SIM does, for two and a half times the data.

So the airport SIM is beaten outright. The city-store price is competitive, but only if you are prepared to find the store, queue, and hand over your passport.

What you give up by going eSIM

Two things, and they are real.

A Turkish number, which the local SIM gives you along with 200 minutes of calls. If you are booking domestic buses, dealing with hotels outside the tourist track, or expect anyone to call you back, that has value no data-only eSIM matches.

And nothing else. Coverage is a genuine unknown on the eSIM side: an earlier version of this page said several travel eSIMs sell the same Turkcell network the local SIM runs on, and no seller here has confirmed anything of the sort.

Network is the one thing to get right

Turkcell has the largest market share and the widest coverage in Turkey, particularly in eastern Turkey, Cappadocia and along the Black Sea coast. Vodafone Turkey is good in the coastal resorts. Türk Telekom is the third option.

This matters more than usual because of where people go. If your trip is Istanbul, Antalya and a beach, any network works. If it includes Cappadocia or the east, Turkcell is the one you want.

The Source column describes the price only. The networks beside it are the sellers' own claims, and we have confirmed none of them.

Four of the five publish nothing. Saily names no Turkish carrier, and neither does Nomad — an earlier version of this page called Nomad the outlier for running on Türk Telekom, and that was our own data talking rather than Nomad's. Airalo is the third: it sells its Turkish eSIM under a product name of its own, Merhaba, which is Airalo branding rather than a network, and it does not publish which carrier the eSIM roams onto. Holafly is the fourth, and it is a new entry to that list. This table used to give it Turkcell and Vodafone; we read its Turkish prices off its own site on 18 August 2026 and it names no carrier for Turkey, or for any of the 28 countries we checked. The Turkcell and Vodafone pair our data carried against eSIMCard's rows came from our own text rather than from eSIMCard, and has gone with its prices. If the specific network matters to you, the only reliable route is a local SIM.

We hold no usable pricing for eSIM Go in Turkey, so it is not in the comparison.

Speeds, and the 5G question

The national average download speed we record is 38 Mbps. Turkish 4G is marketed locally as 4.5G and is strong across all cities and major tourist areas.

5G launched commercially on 1 April 2026, but coverage remains extremely limited. Do not choose a plan on the basis of 5G in Turkey — you will spend almost all your time on 4G regardless of what the plan advertises.

Where the signal goes

No provider fixes these:

• Rural eastern Anatolia
• Cappadocia's valleys between the rock formations — signal can drop in the narrow gorges
• Black Sea mountain roads between towns
• Some Aegean and Mediterranean island-hopping routes, once you are in open water

The Cappadocia one catches people out, because the towns themselves are well covered and the gorges are exactly where you are walking with a map open. Download the area offline before you set out.

Per-gigabyte, at size

Airalo and Saily are 49 cents apart at both 10GB and 20GB over 30 days, so neither is a bargain against the other. What separates them is the top of the ladder: Airalo's 50GB for 30 days at $34.50 is the only plan in Turkey under a dollar a gigabyte, and it costs about what the airport SIM does for two and a half times the data.

Unlimited is a separate calculation. Airalo's verified unlimited runs $11.50 for three days up to $69 for 30; Holafly's, now verified too, runs $11.90 for three days, $20.50 for five, $27.50 for seven, $36.50 for ten, $50.50 for fifteen and $73.90 for 30. Nomad's verified unlimited is $17 for five days and $28 for ten, under both of them at those lengths. Airalo is cheaper than Holafly at all six lengths, and both it and Nomad support tethering, which Holafly does not.

Verdict

Trip of any length, data only. A travel eSIM, and on checked prices that now means Nomad. It is cheapest at every 30-day size: $13 at 10GB against Airalo's $15.50 and Saily's $15.99, $20 at 20GB against $22.50 and $22.99, and $31 at 50GB against Airalo's $34.50 — 62 cents a gigabyte, the cheapest data in the country. This page previously handed that title to Airalo, on the basis that Nomad's prices were unchecked.

You need a Turkish number. Buy the local SIM in a city store, not at the airport. The airport markup is substantial.

Cappadocia or eastern Turkey. A local Turkcell SIM, bought with your passport. No travel eSIM will tell you which network it puts you on, so none of them can be recommended for the reach you need out there.

Tethering a laptop. Anything but Holafly.
