Buying a SIM card at Sabiha Gökçen Airport

The fastest SIM queue in Turkey, and why it still does not save you

Sabiha Gökçen has the shortest counter wait of the three Turkish airports we cover: about 10 minutes at peak, 3 off-peak. On paper that reads like permission to leave it until you land.

It is not, because of the rule that governs every Turkish arrival. The BTK, Turkey's telecoms regulator, blocks international eSIM sellers' websites from inside the country. An eSIM already installed on your phone works fine after you land. Buying one, installing one, topping one up or reinstalling it from Turkish soil does not work without a VPN, and the airport's free wifi does not change that — the block is on the destination, not on your connection.

So the terminal wifi at SAW will let you message home and open a map. It will not let you buy the thing this page is about. Install before you fly, with the profile actually on the phone rather than a QR code saved in your camera roll.

One carrier at the desk

Turkcell is the only network selling to arriving passengers at SAW. Istanbul's main airport has both Turkcell and Vodafone Turkey; here you take what is offered or you go without. If a particular Turkish network matters to you, that is a reason to sort your connectivity out before you choose which Istanbul airport to fly into.

Your passport is required, as it is everywhere in Turkey — prepaid lines are registered to the traveller, so bring the physical document.

We hold no location for the desk inside the terminal, no opening hours, and no evidence about early or late arrivals. Sabiha Gökçen takes a lot of traffic outside conventional hours; we cannot tell you whether the counter is open when you get there, so do not assume it.

The Asian side problem

SAW sits on Istanbul's Asian side, and most visitors are heading across the water. That transfer is where the absence of data actually bites — working out which bus, finding a driver, telling someone you have landed — and it happens before you have reached anywhere you might reasonably buy something.

Ten minutes at a counter is not much. Ten minutes at a counter plus a long transfer with no connection, when the fix had to happen before you boarded, is a bad first hour.

What the counter costs against what it replaces

A prepaid SIM at a Turkish airport runs around $20. We do not hold the data allowance that buys, so this is a price comparison rather than a like-for-like one.

Airalo's prices were read from its own site on 13 August 2026 and Saily's from its own site on 16 August, so both sides of that table are checked.

For a short city break, $6.50 covers a week of maps, messaging and ride-hailing for less than a third of the counter price, and Saily's $6.99 stretches the same 3 GB across a month for 49 cents more. At the other end, Turkey's ladder runs to a verified 50 GB for $34.50 — $0.69 a gigabyte, the cheapest rate we hold anywhere in the country. Turkey is not an expensive eSIM market; it is only expensive if you buy in one-gigabyte pieces.

What we know about the network you get

Buy at the SAW desk and you are on Turkcell, because that is the only thing sold there.

Buy an eSIM and you are mostly relying on nothing. eSIMCard names Turkcell and Vodafone — the seller's own listing, not independently confirmed and not a basis for choosing. Holafly names nothing; the pairing this page used to show against it came from our own data. Saily and Nomad name nothing, although an earlier version of this page said they did. Airalo does not publish a host network for Turkey either; its Turkish plans carry the retail name "Merhaba", which is a product label and not an operator.
