Antalya: strong on the coast, thinner up the mountain

Antalya is Turkey's biggest charter tourism destination. Millions of German, Russian and British visitors arrive each year for all-inclusive beach stays, and a large share of them spend the week between a hotel, a beach and a restaurant within walking distance of both.

For that trip, coverage is a non-issue. The resort strip along Lara Beach and Belek has excellent signal. So does Kaleiçi, the old city, and the harbour. If your plan is a sun lounger and an evening walk round the old town, hotel WiFi plus a modest data plan is more than enough, and you should buy at the small end of the ladder rather than the large one.

We would rather say that plainly than talk you into something bigger.

The Taurus Mountains are the exception

The reason to have a real plan in Antalya is the hinterland. The Taurus Mountains rise steeply behind the city, and signal on the mountain roads is reduced.

Two destinations account for most of the driving. Köprülü Canyon is the rafting trip. Termessos is the ancient site — one of Turkey's most atmospheric, sitting on a forested mountain at 1,200 metres, and worth the loss of signal for what you get. Neither is a place where you want to be working out a junction from memory.

Download maps for the route before you set off from the coast. It is the whole of the preparation required, and the drive up is the only part of an Antalya trip where a missing map costs you real time.

Install before you fly

One thing about Turkey is worth knowing before you land anywhere in the country, Antalya included: eSIM providers' own websites are blocked inside Turkey. If you arrive without a plan already installed, you cannot simply connect to airport WiFi and buy one — the shop you want to visit is not reachable from where you are standing.

That inverts the usual advice. In most countries buying on arrival is merely slower. Here it may not be possible at all, so the eSIM has to be bought and installed before departure. If you have landed without one, a local SIM from a counter is the practical route rather than a workaround on your phone.

What it costs

Turkish plans are national, so nothing below is Antalya-specific. These Airalo prices were read off Airalo's own site on 13 August 2026:

The ladder runs to 50 GB and that row is the cheapest data per gigabyte we hold for Turkey, at $0.69. For a fortnight in a resort it is almost certainly more than you need — the point of listing it is that Turkey's ladder does not stop at 20 GB, which is worth knowing if you are comparing per-gigabyte rates.

Airalo also sells unlimited by duration, verified: $11.50 for three days, $18.50 for five, $24.50 for a week, $34.50 for ten days, $39 for 15 and $69 for 30.

Set that against the local option. A Turkish SIM is typically around $20 at the airport, and needs a passport or ID to register. That is expensive by regional standards and it is beaten outright by the verified eSIM ladder up to 20 GB. Turkey is one of the clearer markets where the eSIM wins on price as well as convenience.

Which network you get

We cannot tell you. Airalo publishes no host network for Turkey; its Turkish product is sold as Merhaba, which is a product name rather than a carrier. Holafly names none either: the Turkish operators once shown against its rows came from our own data rather than from Holafly. Saily and Nomad name none — an earlier version of this page said they did — and we hold no read of eSIMCard's Turkish listing, so we would not pick a plan on it for a drive into the Taurus.
