Buying a SIM card in Turkey: airport, city shop, or before you fly

Decide before you board the plane

Turkey’s telecommunications regulator, the BTK, has blocked access from inside Turkey to most international eSIM provider websites — Airalo, Holafly, Nomad, Saily and others. An eSIM you have already installed keeps working normally once you land. What you cannot do from inside the country without a VPN is buy one, install a profile you have paid for, top up, or reinstall it after a reset.

This reverses the usual advice. In most countries an eSIM is the thing you can sort out from the airport WiFi if you forget. In Turkey it is the thing you must sort out first, and the physical SIM counter is the fallback.

So: buy the eSIM at home, install it at home, and check it appears in your phone's mobile data settings before you travel. If you did not, read on — the counters are fine.

The airport counters

A passport is required for registration at all of them — this is a legal requirement, not a formality, and the counter staff will scan it. Antalya has the longest peak wait of the three, which is worth knowing if you are connecting to a resort transfer.

Turkcell is present at all three, and Turkcell is the network we recommend for visitors: largest market share, and the widest coverage in eastern Turkey, Cappadocia and along the Black Sea coast. If you have a choice at the counter, take it.

What it costs, at the airport and in town

Our data puts a typical airport tourist data package at around $20. The specific Turkcell tourist SIM sold at Istanbul Airport is priced higher than that: roughly 1,300 TL, about $35, for 20GB of data plus 200 minutes and WhatsApp access, valid 30 days. City stores sell noticeably cheaper — in the region of 700–900 TL for a comparable package.

So the airport premium in Turkey is real and large. If you can survive on hotel and café WiFi for the first afternoon, walking into a city centre carrier store instead of buying in arrivals can save you the price of a good dinner. Both routes require your passport.

The cheapest verified eSIM row we hold for Turkey is Saily at $3.99 for 1GB over seven days, read from Saily's own site on 16 August 2026. Airalo's $4.00 for 1GB over three days, read on 13 August, is a cent more for less than half the calendar.

The like-for-like against the counter is the 20GB comparison. The Turkcell tourist pack at Istanbul Airport is about 1,300 TL, roughly $35, for 20GB over 30 days with 200 minutes. Airalo's verified 20GB month is $22.50 and Saily's is $22.99 — the same data for around a third less, with no passport scan and no queue. What you give up is the Turkish phone number and the 200 minutes.

WiFi will hold you over

Turkey is easy on this front. Hotels, restaurants, shopping malls and the tea garden cafés all run WiFi as standard, and Istanbul and Antalya both have strong free public WiFi zones. That is enough to get from the airport to your hotel, look up an address, and message home while you work out which SIM you want.

What it is not enough for is navigating a rental car out of the airport, so if you are driving straight off the plane, buy the connectivity first.

Which route to take

Staying two weeks or more, want a Turkish number, and happy to hand over a passport? Buy a local SIM, but buy it in a city store rather than at arrivals. Staying under two weeks and only need data? An eSIM bought before departure is cheaper and skips the queue and the passport scan entirely. Arriving with nothing and needing data immediately?
