Buying a SIM card at Antalya Airport

The queue here is the longest in Turkey, and the figure flatters it

Antalya's SIM counter runs about 20 minutes at peak and 5 off-peak. That is already the slowest of the three main Turkish arrival airports, and between June and September it understates the problem: Antalya takes enormous charter volumes in high season, and the counter queue grows to match. If you land on a package flight in August, standing in an arrivals queue is the last thing you want to be doing.

The awkward part is that the obvious workaround is closed. Turkey's telecoms regulator blocks international eSIM sellers' websites from inside the country, so you cannot stand in the terminal, open a provider's site on the free wifi and buy your way out of the queue. An eSIM has to be bought and installed before you fly — the profile on the phone, not a QR code in your photos. An eSIM you already have keeps working normally once you land; it is only the buying that fails.

That is the whole decision at AYT. Sort it out at home, or accept the counter and whatever the queue is doing on the day you arrive.

What is at the counter

Turkcell is the only network selling to arriving passengers at Antalya. Istanbul Airport offers a choice between Turkcell and Vodafone Turkey; here there is none.

A passport is required. Turkish prepaid lines are registered to the traveller, so bring the physical document rather than a photo of it.

Beyond that, we hold very little: no location for the desk inside the terminal, no opening hours, and nothing about whether it is staffed for the early-morning and late-night charter arrivals that make up a lot of Antalya's traffic. Given how much of the season's flying happens outside office hours, that gap matters more here than at most airports. Do not build your arrival around a counter we cannot promise is open.

Twenty dollars against a fortnight of data

A prepaid SIM at a Turkish airport costs around $20. We do not hold the allowance that includes, so treat the table below as a price comparison rather than a like-for-like one.

The Airalo rows were read from its own site on 13 August 2026 and the Saily row from its own site on 16 August. Saily sells its Turkish data on 30-day validity throughout, so its 3 GB at $6.99 buys a full month; at 10 GB, though, Saily's 30-day plan is $15.99 against Airalo's $15.00 for a fortnight.

Two weeks of maps, WhatsApp and photo backup on a resort holiday is comfortably inside 10 GB for most people, which is $15 and no queue. And it is worth noticing the bottom of that table: Turkey's ladder runs to a verified 50 GB at $34.50, which is $0.69 a gigabyte — the cheapest rate we hold for the country and less than a third of what the small plans charge per gigabyte. Nobody needs 50 GB for a beach week, but the shape of the pricing is the point. Turkish data is cheap in bulk and expensive in slices.

Network, and how much of it we actually know

Buy at the AYT desk and you are on Turkcell by default, because nothing else is sold there.

Buy an eSIM and the network is mostly not stated at all. eSIMCard names Turkcell and Vodafone — the seller's own listing, not independently confirmed and not a sound basis for choosing a plan. Holafly names nothing; the Turkcell and Vodafone Turkey pairing this page used to show against it came from our own data. Saily and Nomad name nothing, although an earlier version of this page said they did. Airalo does not publish a host network for Turkey either; its plans are sold under the name "Merhaba", which is a retail product name rather than a carrier.
