Buying a SIM card at Istanbul Airport

Install it before you board, or the counter becomes your only option

Turkey's telecoms regulator blocks international eSIM sellers' websites from inside the country. This is the single most important arrival fact on this site, and it applies at Istanbul Airport like everywhere else in Turkey.

An eSIM already installed on your phone keeps working normally once you land. What you cannot do from Turkish soil is buy one, install one, top one up, or reinstall it after a wipe — the seller's website does not load without a working VPN. The usual fallback of sorting it out after landing does not exist here.

So the sequence matters. Buy and complete the installation before you board: profile on the phone, not a QR code saved in your photos. If you arrive at IST without one, the carrier desks in arrivals are effectively your only route to data.

What is at the IST counter

Turkcell and Vodafone Turkey both sell to arriving passengers. That makes Istanbul the only Turkish airport in our data where you get a choice of network at the desk — Sabiha Gökçen and Antalya have Turkcell alone.

Expect about 15 minutes at peak and 5 off-peak, which is the middle of the three Turkish airports we cover. Your passport is required; Turkish prepaid lines are registered to the traveller, so bring the physical document and expect the clerk to hold it for a minute or two while the line is created.

The Turkcell booth here is efficient and English-speaking. That is worth saying plainly, because it is not true of every arrivals counter in the world, and if you have to buy locally somewhere in Turkey this is the least painful place to do it.

What we do not hold: where in the terminal the desks are, what hours they keep, or whether they cover the earliest and latest arrivals. IST is a very large building and we cannot direct you across it. If you are connecting straight onto a domestic flight, you may not pass through the arrivals hall at all, so do not plan around reaching a counter you may never walk past.

Twenty dollars, and what else that buys

A prepaid SIM at a Turkish airport costs around $20. We do not hold what allowance that includes, so the comparison below is not gigabyte-for-gigabyte — but the spread is wide enough to be worth ten minutes of preparation at home.

The Airalo rows were read from its own site on 13 August 2026 and the Saily rows from its own site on 16 August.

The two verified providers sit almost on top of each other: Saily is a cent cheaper at 5 GB, Airalo 49 cents cheaper at 10 GB and again at 20 GB. Choosing between them on price alone is not worth the reading time.

Note where the ladder ends. Turkey runs all the way to a verified 50 GB at $34.50 — $0.69 a gigabyte, a quarter of the rate on the 1 GB starter and the cheapest per-gigabyte figure we hold for the country. Buying small is the expensive way to buy Turkish data. If you are here for a fortnight or more, the large plan is the economical choice, not the extravagant one.

Which network you end up on

Turkey has three carriers: Turkcell, Vodafone Turkey and Türk Telekom. At the IST desk you pick one directly, and that certainty is the one real advantage the counter has.

With an eSIM you are trusting what the seller says, and here none of them says anything. The carriers our own data carried against eSIMCard's rows here came from this site's generated text rather than from eSIMCard, so we no longer repeat them — it is the only one of the six that publishes a host network at all, so its own listing is the place to look. Holafly publishes none: the Turkcell and Vodafone Turkey pairing this page used to show against it came from our own data. Saily and Nomad name nothing, although an earlier version of this page said otherwise. Airalo does not publish a host network for Turkey either; its plans are sold under the name "Merhaba", which is a retail product label rather than an operator.

If the specific network genuinely matters to your trip, the arrivals counter is the only place you can be certain what you are buying. For everyone else it is noise, and the pre-installed eSIM wins on the block alone.
