Buying a SIM card at a Turkish airport

Read this before you land

Turkey’s telecoms regulator, the BTK, has blocked access to most international eSIM providers' websites from inside the country — Airalo, Holafly, Nomad and Saily among them.

An eSIM you already have keeps working normally. What you cannot do from Turkish soil is buy one, install one, top one up or reinstall one, unless you have a working VPN. That turns a small errand into a genuine problem: the usual fallback of "I'll sort it out when I land" does not exist here.

So the rule for Turkey is stricter than for anywhere else on this site. Buy your eSIM and complete the installation before you board your flight. Not the download page bookmarked, not the QR code saved — installed, with the profile on the phone.

What is at each airport

Your passport is required at all three. Turkish prepaid lines are registered to the traveller, so bring the physical document rather than a photo of it, and expect the clerk to keep it for a couple of minutes while the line is set up.

The Turkcell booth at Istanbul is efficient and English-speaking, which is not something we can say of every arrivals counter. If you have decided to buy locally, that is the least painful place in the country to do it.

Antalya is the one to plan around. Between June and September the airport takes enormous charter volumes, and the SIM counter queue stretches well past the 20-minute peak figure above. If you are arriving in high summer on a package flight, the counter is the last place you want to be standing.

Sabiha Gökçen, on the Asian side, is the quickest of the three — three minutes off-peak — but the same BTK block applies there as everywhere else, so it does not rescue anyone who arrives without an eSIM and hoped to buy one on the terminal wifi.

The price gap

A prepaid SIM at a Turkish airport typically costs around $20. Against that:

The airport SIM costs more than every metered eSIM up to 20 GB. We do not hold what allowance the $20 counter package includes, so this is not a strict gigabyte-for-gigabyte comparison — but it is a wide enough gap to be worth the ten minutes of preparation at home.

Airalo and Saily are both checked now, and at the sizes where they overlap the gap is pennies: Saily is a cent under at 5 GB for 30 days, Airalo 49 cents under at 10 GB and again at 20 GB for 30 days. Neither is the expensive option here.

Also worth noticing where the Turkish ladder bottoms out. Airalo's verified 50 GB at $34.50 is $0.69 a gigabyte, a quarter of the rate on the 1 GB starter and the cheapest per-gigabyte figure we hold for the country. If you are here for a month, the large plan is the economical one, not the extravagant one.

Which network you get, and how much of that we actually know

Turkey has three carriers: Turkcell, Vodafone Turkey and Türk Telekom. At the airport you choose directly — Turkcell at all three terminals, Vodafone Turkey additionally at Istanbul.

With an eSIM you are mostly relying on nothing at all. The carriers our own data carried against eSIMCard's rows here came from this site's generated text rather than from eSIMCard, so we no longer repeat them — it is the only one of the six that publishes a host network at all, so its own listing is the place to look. Holafly lists nothing — the Turkcell and Vodafone Turkey pairing this page used to carry against it came from our own data. Saily and Nomad publish no Turkish host network — earlier versions of this page credited them with one, and that was wrong. Airalo does not publish a host network for Turkey either — its plans are sold under the name "Merhaba", which is a product label, not a carrier.

We would not choose a plan on the strength of any of it. If a specific Turkish network genuinely matters to your trip, the airport counter is the only place you can be sure what you are buying.
