eSIMCard in South Africa: no price from us, and why

Both South African rows have been withdrawn

This review held two eSIMCard plans for South Africa and compared them tier by tier against the field. Both rows have now been withdrawn — removed from the table here and from the cheapest-per-gigabyte ranking across the site, rather than relabelled.

This is a stronger statement than the indicative label those rows used to carry. Indicative means unread but plausible. On 18 August 2026 we read eSIMCard's own pages and found the plan our data priced identically in fifteen unrelated markets sells for well under half of it in Japan, and that our sizes matched neither tier it really sells. Once you know a number is wrong, calling it indicative stops being a caveat and starts being a euphemism.

Replacing them was not an option. eSIMCard sells the same size over the same duration at several prices at once — a Standard/Universal toggle switches the whole range between two product lines, every plan carries a speed-limit flag buried in its own details modal, and the operators named vary plan by plan. Our records hold only provider, size, days and price, so any single figure we stored would have flattened those distinctions into a claim we cannot support. Our eSIMCard page has the detail.

What an eSIM for South Africa actually costs

Where Vodacom and MTN stop

Vodacom is the network we recommend for South Africa. It has the widest national coverage, over 99% of the urban population, the fastest 5G in the country, and — the part that matters to visitors — coverage along game reserve access roads, the Garden Route and across Cape Town. MTN is second, strong in urban areas and along game reserve corridors. The carriers our own records held against eSIMCard's South African rows came from this site's generated text rather than from eSIMCard, so we no longer present them as its listing. The average speed travellers actually see nationally is around 35 Mbps.

Neither network fixes the country's real gaps:

• Remote game reserve interiors, with some Kruger camps very limited
• The Kalahari desert region
• The Northern Cape interior
• Some Drakensberg hiking routes
• Border areas with Lesotho and Eswatini, where signal can drop away

None of that is any seller's failing. No provider solves it, because the towers are not there. Download offline maps before any self-drive safari, whatever you buy.

What eSIMCard still does that nobody else does

eSIMCard is the only one of the six sellers on this site that publishes the host network at all. We read that directly: its Japan page names three Japanese operators against its plans, in a Supported Countries & Networks block. Airalo, Nomad, Saily and Holafly name no operator in any country, and eSIM Go has no consumer page on which it could. That is a genuine difference, and the price check left it untouched.

The carriers our own records held against its rows here came from this site's generated text rather than from eSIMCard, so those are ours to withdraw and not its claim to defend. Its own country listing is the place to look. South Africa is a country where the answer earns its keep: Vodacom's reach along game reserve access roads and the Garden Route is the difference that matters.

Verdict

We have no South African price for eSIMCard, so this page no longer places it. That is a gap in our records rather than a judgement on the shop.
