MTN South Africa SIM card: tourist bundles sold at airports
MTN's traveller bundle terms offer 10 or 20 GB for 30 days to prepaid tourists with a passport, sold at three airports. The terms are old.
Is an MTN South Africa SIM card good for a visitor?
MTN has a defined tourist offer, but the document that describes it dates from 2020, so treat the details as a pointer and check the airport store. If the offer still runs, it is a straightforward choice: a prepaid SIM and 30-day data bundle bought where you land, with your passport. If you need a quick plan before you leave home, a travel eSIM is easier.
What do the MTN traveller bundle terms say?
We read MTN's Traveller Data Bundles terms on 8 October 2026. They state:
- Eligibility. The offer is exclusive to new MTN prepaid tourist customers. The terms accept a passport, a flight seat number or a flight number in one clause, but another clause requires a passport.
- Bundles. 10 GB at R499 and 20 GB at R699, each valid 30 days from activation. The 20 GB bundle is described under a "Night Express" label, whose data works only from midnight to 04:59, so read the clause before you buy.
- Where. MTN stores at O.R. Tambo, Cape Town International and King Shaka International airports.
- Limits. Bundles work only in South Africa, within MTN coverage, with no roaming, and cannot be transferred.
- Dates. The offer ran from 25 February 2020 until MTN says otherwise. We cannot tell if the bundles and prices are current.
Do you need RICA?
Yes. The terms say you must give proof of your full names, surname, ID number and residential address to a RICA office when buying a SIM, and that MTN will not activate a SIM until RICA is complete. For a tourist, the wording on address is awkward, so ask the store what it accepts as your address. We did not read MTN's self-RICA pages directly.
Coverage and eSIM
The terms promise only that bundles work within MTN coverage. We read no coverage figure. MTN also sells a separate travel eSIM for use outside South Africa, which is not the local tourist SIM; we did not read it. Our network notes call MTN second in coverage, which is an unverified lead.
MTN compared with a travel eSIM
Compare MTN's R499 for 10 GB with the options on our South Africa SIM card comparison and the cheapest eSIM page. Other carriers: Vodacom, Telkom and Cell C. Back to the South Africa hub.
Bottom line
Our verdict on the MTN South Africa SIM card is that the MTN tourist bundles are a clear idea but their terms date from 2020. Check MTN prepaid prices and MTN coverage in store.
Common questions
Does MTN sell a tourist SIM card in South Africa?
MTN's Traveller Data Bundles terms describe an offer for new prepaid tourists: 10 GB for R499 or 20 GB for R699, each valid for 30 days, sold at its stores at O.R. Tambo, Cape Town and King Shaka airports. The terms date from 2020, so confirm current prices in store.
Do I need a passport for an MTN SIM in South Africa?
MTN's traveller terms require a passport for the tourist offer and say RICA must be completed before the SIM is activated. They also ask for a residential address, which is awkward for visitors, so ask the airport store what it will accept.
Where can I buy an MTN tourist SIM?
The terms name MTN stores at O.R. Tambo International in Johannesburg, Cape Town International and King Shaka International in Durban. They do not name other outlets, so if you arrive elsewhere, check MTN's site or ask a store whether the tourist offer is still sold there.
Can I use MTN tourist data outside South Africa?
No. The terms say the bundles work only in South Africa, within MTN network coverage, and roaming is not available. They also cannot be transferred. MTN sells a separate travel eSIM for abroad, which we did not read. Check the carrier's own page before you buy.
Are the MTN traveller bundle prices current?
We cannot say. The terms we read say the offer began on 25 February 2020 and runs until MTN says otherwise, but we found no update. Treat R499 and R699 as the figures in those terms and confirm in store before you rely on them.
