Telkom South Africa SIM card: prepaid options and the RICA catch
Telkom sells prepaid bundles, but its RICA page asks for a South African ID and proof of residence. It does not mention passports.
Is a Telkom South Africa SIM card a good choice for a visitor?
Probably not the easiest. Telkom sells ordinary prepaid bundles, but its RICA page describes a registration flow built for residents: a South African ID, proof of residence and a selfie. It does not mention passports or foreign visitors, and we found no tourist product. Telkom may suit a longer stay if a store confirms they can register you.
What does Telkom sell as prepaid?
We read Telkom's homepage on 8 October 2026. It lists prepaid bundles, including Plug'd for 18 to 24 year olds registered on the MyTelkom app: 1 GB valid 7 days at R19.45, 850 MB for 6 days at R17.65, 550 MB for 5 days at R11.49, and 335 MB for 3 days at R7.50. Other pages cover social and WhatsApp bundles, weekend bundles, Tap2Win and top-ups from R29. The homepage does not cover eSIM, tourist SIMs or 4G and 5G coverage. Plug'd is limited by age, so most visitors would not qualify for those prices. Telkom's current prices are on its site.
What does Telkom's RICA page require?
We read rica.telkom.co.za. It has five steps: enter your SIM's ICCID, add contact and address details, upload a South African ID, upload proof of residence such as a utility bill, store statement or bank statement not older than three months, and take a selfie. After RICA you need a minimum R10 recharge to activate the SIM. The page mentions only a South African ID and does not address passports or foreign nationals, and its email for RICA queries is on the page. A tourist without a local address document may not complete the online route. Ask in a Telkom store whether a passport and accommodation letter would work.
Coverage
The pages we read make no coverage or 5G claim. Our network notes do not recommend Telkom for tourists, which is an unverified lead. We make no claim either way.
Telkom compared with a travel eSIM
For most visitors, the combination of age-restricted prices and a resident-focused RICA flow makes a travel eSIM simpler. See the South Africa SIM card comparison and the cheapest eSIM page. If you want a local SIM, Vodacom and MTN describe tourist offers. See also Cell C and the South Africa hub.
Bottom line
Our verdict on the Telkom South Africa SIM card is that Telkom prepaid is hard to recommend to a visitor, since Telkom's RICA page mentions only a South African ID and no tourist SIM is listed.
Common questions
Does Telkom sell a tourist SIM in South Africa?
We found no tourist or visitor SIM on the Telkom pages we read. Its homepage lists ordinary prepaid bundles and a youth-only Plug'd range. Vodacom and MTN describe tourist offers, so compare them with Telkom or with a travel eSIM before choosing.
Can a foreigner RICA a Telkom SIM with a passport?
Telkom's RICA page asks for a South African ID and proof of residence, and does not mention passports or foreign nationals. We cannot say whether a passport works. Ask in a Telkom store before you buy, and bring a letter from your accommodation.
How much is Telkom prepaid data?
On Telkom's homepage on 8 October 2026, Plug'd bundles for 18 to 24 year olds ranged from R7.50 for 335 MB over 3 days to R19.45 for 1 GB over 7 days. Top-ups start at R29. Check Telkom's site for current prices.
Does Telkom have an eSIM?
The Telkom pages we read did not mention an eSIM for prepaid customers, so we cannot confirm that one exists for visitors. If you want an eSIM before you land, compare a travel eSIM, which you can install at home, on our South Africa comparison page.
What is the minimum recharge after RICA on Telkom?
Telkom's RICA page says that after you complete RICA registration, a minimum recharge of R10 is needed to activate the SIM. Its homepage lists prepaid top-ups from R29, so check in store which amount applies to the product you are buying.
