Vodacom South Africa SIM card: the Travel SIM bundles for tourists

Vodacom lists Travel SIM bundles for tourists, 3 to 10 GB for 30 days, sold at airport stores. Every SIM must be RICA registered.

Is a Vodacom South Africa SIM card a good choice for a visitor?

Of the four South African carriers, Vodacom is the one with a clearly labelled tourist product on its site: Travel SIM bundles, available to tourists entering the country and sold at its airport stores. That makes it the easiest to plan around. The costs are a physical SIM, a RICA registration step with your passport, and prices that were fixed on a page whose date we could not confirm.

What are the Vodacom Travel SIM bundles?

We read Vodacom's Travel SIM terms page on 8 October 2026. It lists three bundles.

  • 3 GB, R299: 30 minutes, R50 airtime and 30 SMS.
  • 5 GB, R449: 50 minutes, R100 airtime and 50 SMS.
  • 10 GB, R699: 100 minutes, R150 airtime and 100 SMS.

Each is valid for 30 days from activation, is a once-off allocation that does not renew, and includes Free International Calling Plus. Unused data is lost at the end of day 30. Bundles are sold at Vodacom airport stores and participating retailers, and once-off bundles can also be bought via *135# or the VodaPay app. They are not transferable, and they do not apply to data roaming. Prices are as read on that page; it carries no date we could confirm, so check them in store.

Do you need RICA?

Yes. The Travel SIM page says the bundle is allocated at SIM purchase, RICA and activation, and gives no more detail. RICA is South Africa's SIM registration law. In practice you will need your passport, and our reading of other South African carrier pages suggests an address step can complicate things for visitors, so ask the airport store what it needs from a tourist. We did not read Vodacom's RICA help page directly.

Coverage and eSIM

Vodacom's pages we read made no 4G or 5G claim, and we saw no tourist eSIM. Our network notes call Vodacom's coverage the widest, which is an unverified lead, not a source. If you are driving to game reserves, check Vodacom's coverage map for your route.

Vodacom compared with a travel eSIM

A Vodacom Travel SIM gives you a local number, but you collect and register it after a long flight. A travel eSIM is installed before you leave. See the South Africa SIM card comparison and the cheapest eSIM page. Other carriers: MTN, Telkom and Cell C. Back to the South Africa hub.

Bottom line

Our verdict on the Vodacom South Africa SIM card is that the Vodacom tourist SIM is the clearest local option we found, as long as you accept RICA and check Vodacom prices in store.

Common questions

Does Vodacom sell a tourist SIM card in South Africa?

Yes. Vodacom's Travel SIM page lists bundles for tourists entering South Africa: 3 GB for R299, 5 GB for R449 and 10 GB for R699, each valid for 30 days. They are sold at Vodacom airport stores and participating retailers. Check prices in store because the page is undated.

Do I need a passport to buy a Vodacom SIM in South Africa?

Vodacom's Travel SIM page says the bundle is allocated at SIM purchase, RICA and activation, which means you must complete RICA registration. Bring your passport. The page does not list the documents required, so ask the airport store what a tourist must provide.

What is RICA in South Africa?

RICA is South Africa's law requiring every SIM card to be registered to an identified person. Vodacom's Travel SIM page says RICA happens at purchase and activation. For visitors that means showing a passport at the store, and possibly other details. Ask what is needed.

Does Vodacom South Africa have an eSIM for tourists?

We found no tourist eSIM on the Vodacom pages we read. The Travel SIM page describes a physical starter pack. If you want an eSIM before you land, compare a travel eSIM, which you can install at home, on our South Africa comparison page.

Can I use Vodacom's Travel SIM data outside South Africa?

The page says once-off data bundles do not apply to data roaming, and standard international calls are charged per minute. So treat the data as South Africa only. Check the bundle's terms in store if you are crossing a border.
