Saily in South Africa: strong at the entry plan, beaten above it

Five plans, and almost all of them last a month

Saily keeps its South African range short. Five capped plans, no calls or SMS. Four of the five run for thirty days, which is the range's quiet strength — there is no seven-day version sitting alongside the monthly one to catch out a hurried buyer.

All five were read off Saily's own site on 18 August 2026. Two moved: the 5GB month is two dollars cheaper than we said and the 20GB month a dollar dearer, which is enough to flip the 20GB comparison below.

Hotspot sharing is supported across Saily's plans. That is worth stating plainly because it is not universal in this market: Holafly's South African eSIMs do not allow tethering at all. If a laptop needs to get online, Saily can do it and Holafly cannot.

Where Saily wins and where it loses

In some countries Saily undercuts Airalo across the board. South Africa is not one of them.

CellSA takes 5GB by 49 cents and 10GB by 99 cents. Saily takes 20GB, but by a single cent — an earlier version of this page had that margin at $1.01, and on the corrected figure it is one penny, which is no margin at all.

Nomad settles all four. Its South African prices were read off its own site on 18 August 2026, and they are the lowest of the three at every size: $8, $11, $18 and $29. Above 20GB none of the three sells anything; Airalo's verified 50GB month is $49, or 98 cents a gigabyte, and it is the only plan that size in the country.

One thing to get right at checkout: Airalo sells two named lines in South Africa, CellSA and CellSA Plus, and lists every size under both. CellSA is the cheaper one and the Airalo figures above are all CellSA; CellSA Plus runs $0.50 to $6 dearer for the same data and validity — $13.50 at 5GB, $24 at 10GB, $40 at 20GB, $55 at 50GB. What the Plus tier buys is not stated by Airalo, and if you take it instead, Saily's 10GB and 20GB plans both come out ahead.

At the very bottom, Saily's 1GB for $3.99 buys a full week. Airalo's CellSA 1GB is $4 for three days ($4.50 on CellSA Plus), Nomad's is $4 for a week. So Saily is the cheapest entry price in South Africa, and the best-shaped one — a week of validity for a penny under four dollars beats a three-day plan for a dollar less.

The 3GB month, which is no longer Saily's alone

This page used to call Saily's 3GB/30-day plan its most useful, on the grounds that nothing else in South Africa sold three gigabytes over a month: Airalo's 3GB plans stop at seven days, at $9 on CellSA and $10 on CellSA Plus, and we had Nomad's 3GB month at an unverified $11.

Nomad's real price is $8, read off its own site. So the plan Saily charges $9.99 for is available for two dollars less from a seller whose figure has been checked, and the recommendation goes with it.

The shape of the argument still holds: for a three-week trip built around WhatsApp, maps and the occasional booking, three gigabytes spread over a month is often the right amount. It is just no longer Saily that sells it best.

Network and coverage

Our data holds no host network for Saily in South Africa, and none for Saily in any of the forty-eight countries we cover. An earlier version of this page said we listed "Vodacom / MTN" against two of Saily's five South African plans; that came from older generated text rather than the provider's own site, and it has been removed. Do not choose Saily on the strength of a carrier name.

The coverage picture itself is not in dispute. Signal is limited or absent in remote game reserve interiors, including some Kruger camps, across the Kalahari, through much of the Northern Cape interior, and on parts of the Drakensberg hiking routes. No eSIM improves on that, and the only way to control which operator you are on is to buy that operator's own SIM.

Verdict

Saily is the right pick in South Africa for anyone who wants a week of data for under $4, and its monthly validity across the range removes a decision you would otherwise have to get right in advance. That is now most of what it has: Nomad's verified prices are lower at every size above one gigabyte — $8, $11, $18 and $29 against Saily's $9.99, $12.99, $22.99 and $36.99.

Airalo's CellSA line is better value than Saily at 5GB and 10GB on prices we have verified, level with it to the cent at 20GB, and it is the only option above 20GB. Its 50GB month works out at 98 cents a gigabyte, the cheapest rate in the country. Buy CellSA rather than CellSA Plus: the Plus premium buys nothing Airalo has described, and paying it hands the 10GB and 20GB comparisons back to Saily.
