Holafly in South Africa: unlimited data you cannot share

Six plans, all unlimited

Holafly sells nothing capped in South Africa. Every plan is unlimited data with no calls and no SMS. These prices were read off Holafly's own site on 18 August 2026.

A correction, and it removes the item this page called distinctive. We previously listed a one-day South African plan at $9.90 and described it as the only product in our South African data sold by the day. Holafly sells no one-day plan, here or anywhere: its range is 3, 5, 7, 10, 15 and 30 days. Every other price we printed was too low as well — five days is $30.90 rather than $27.90, and the month is $111.90 rather than $74.90, an understatement of $37.

South Africa is now one of Holafly's two most expensive countries, level with India at $111.90 for a month and behind only Albania.

The restriction that decides most of this

Holafly's South Africa plans do not support hotspot sharing. This is not a setting you can switch on, and it is not something support can lift for you. If you want to tether a laptop, a tablet or a travelling companion's phone, these plans cannot do it.

That matters more than it sounds, because tethering is one of the main reasons people pay for unlimited in the first place. An unlimited plan that can only feed one handset is a much narrower product: it is for someone who streams, video-calls and navigates heavily on their own phone and nothing else. If you were planning to work from a laptop in a Cape Town guesthouse on this eSIM, it will not do the job — check the tethering terms on a capped plan instead.

Unlimited against a very large cap

The comparison that should decide your purchase is not Holafly against another unlimited plan. It is unlimited against a cap big enough that the difference stops being real.

Airalo's verified CellSA 50GB/30-day plan for South Africa is $49. Holafly's unlimited month is $111.90. You are paying $62.90 more for the stretch beyond fifty gigabytes, which very few holiday itineraries reach — and the Airalo plan will also share to other devices, which Holafly's will not. Nomad's verified 20GB month at $29 and Airalo's 10GB month at $22 are the ordinary-traveller answers.

Against the other unlimited sellers

Airalo sells unlimited only under CellSA, with no Plus version; Nomad sells two lengths.

Holafly is 60 cents under Airalo at three and five days, level at seven, and $4.50 under at fifteen. Airalo takes ten days by 90 cents and the month by $12.90 — this page used to claim Holafly won the month "by a lot", on a price $37 below what Holafly charges.

Nomad is the one to notice: $19 for five uncapped days and $37 for ten, roughly $10 to $12 under both of the others.

The network claim we cannot stand behind

Our data used to list MTN against two of Holafly's six South African plans and leave the other four blank. Those entries came out of older generated text rather than from the provider, and reading Holafly's own pages settled it: it publishes no host network for South Africa, or for any of the countries we checked. There is no MTN listing here to drive your choice.

That caution is worth taking seriously in South Africa, where the operators diverge outside the metros. Signal is limited or absent in remote game reserve interiors, including some Kruger camps, across the Kalahari, through much of the Northern Cape interior and on several Drakensberg hiking routes. Unlimited data has no value in a place with no mast, and if a particular network's rural footprint is what you actually need, the only reliable way to get it is a local SIM from that operator.

Verdict

The fifteen-day plan at $63.50 is the one window where Holafly is meaningfully the cheapest uncapped option, at $4.50 under Airalo. Everything else points elsewhere: Nomad is $10 to $12 cheaper at five and ten days, Airalo takes the month by $12.90, and a 50GB month at $49 costs $62.90 less than Holafly's unlimited.

Do not buy it if you need to tether anything, or if you will use less than about 50GB in a month. Note that Holafly needs no ID, while a local prepaid SIM at around $18 from the airport requires a passport to register. Full comparison on the South Africa hub.
