Nomad in South Africa: the network claim has gone, and the prices got better

This review used to open by saying Nomad was the one travel eSIM that ran on Vodacom and nothing else, and the whole page followed from it: pay a dollar more than Saily, know exactly which network you land on, buy it for a self-drive route.

Nomad publishes no host carrier. Not for South Africa, and not for any of the 47 countries whose prices we have now read directly off nomadesim.com. The Vodacom attribution came from our own generated data, and verifying the prices is what exposed it. There is no network certainty to buy here, at any price.

What survives is hotspot support, which is real, and a price list that turns out to be considerably better than the one we published.

An earlier version of this page listed two plans, at $5 and $11, and warned that the range might be incomplete. It was: there are five metered sizes and two unlimited blocks, and the entry plan is a dollar cheaper than we said.

Nomad against Saily and Airalo

Saily takes the single gigabyte by one cent. Nomad takes everything else, by $1.99 at 3GB, $1.50 against Airalo at 5GB, $4 at 10GB and $8 at 20GB. Airalo's and Saily's figures are both verified now, so the 20GB comparison — $29 against $37 from Airalo and $36.99 from Saily — is the firmest and the widest.

The one place Nomad is beaten outright is the top of the range. Airalo's verified 50GB month at $49 works out at 98 cents a gigabyte, the cheapest rate we hold for South Africa, and Nomad sells nothing that large here.

All of these undercut a local prepaid SIM, which costs around $18 at an airport counter and requires RICA registration with a passport at the point of sale. Every travel eSIM skips that queue — and a local SIM is now the only way to choose your carrier, since Airalo, Saily, Nomad and Holafly all publish nothing and we hold no read of eSIMCard's South African listing.

Which network you would want, and why you cannot have it

Vodacom is the carrier we would recommend for South Africa: the widest national coverage, over 99% of the urban population, the fastest 5G, and reach along game reserve access roads, the Garden Route and Cape Town. MTN is a good second, strongest in cities rather than on the roads between them.

No travel eSIM will tell you which of them you get. If that decides your trip, buy locally and choose at the counter.

Where even the best network stops

Buying well does not buy you coverage everywhere. The known gaps apply to Nomad as much as anyone:

• Remote game reserve interiors — some Kruger camps have very limited signal
• The Kalahari desert region
• The Northern Cape interior
• Some Drakensberg hiking routes
• Border areas with Lesotho and Eswatini, where signal can drop away

National average speed sits around 35 Mbps. Download offline maps before any self-drive safari or mountain hike, regardless of what you have installed.

Verdict

Buy Nomad for South Africa on price, which is now a much better reason than the one this page used to give. It is the cheapest verified option at 3, 5, 10 and 20GB, it allows tethering, and its figures have been checked rather than estimated.

Buy something else for a single gigabyte, where Saily is a cent cheaper, or for a heavy month, where Airalo's 50GB at $49 is the only plan of that size and the cheapest per gigabyte in the country. Do not buy any of them expecting to know your network.
