Airalo in Ireland: fairly priced, and quieter about coverage than we used to claim

Every figure here was read from Airalo's own site on 13 August 2026. That matters on this page more than usual, because the numbers this page carried previously were wrong in the same direction throughout, overstating the 10GB and 20GB plans by several dollars each and giving the entry plan a seven-day window it does not have.

Shorter windows cost a little less at each size — 5GB over 7 days is $10, 10GB over 15 days is $15, 20GB over 15 days is $25. Unlimited plans sit alongside the metered ones, from $11.50 for three days to $71 for thirty.

That is a dense ladder by Irish standards. Most providers here sell two or three plans; Airalo sells fourteen metered options plus six unlimited ones, and the granularity is genuinely useful when your trip is nine days rather than a round week.

Where it wins and where it doesn't

Airalo is mid-field at the sizes everyone buys and unopposed at the top.

Nomad's Irish prices have now been read off its own site, on 17 August 2026, and that changed this comparison in both directions. At 5GB over 30 days Nomad is $12.50 against Airalo's verified $11 — this page previously had it at $9, and it was wrong. At 10GB over 30 days Nomad is $16 against Airalo's $17, and Saily, now checked, is $17.99.

Above 10GB the comparison used to end, because nothing else in our Irish data went higher. It does now: Nomad sells 20GB for a verified $20, five and a half dollars under Airalo's $25.50 and a round dollar a gigabyte. Airalo takes the top rung back at 50GB, where its $42 is 84 cents a gigabyte against Nomad's $45, and that remains the cheapest unit rate in the country. If you are working from Dublin for a month, or driving the Wild Atlantic Way with a phone doing all the navigation, those two rows are where to look.

At the unlimited end it is closer, and Airalo now loses the short lengths. Nomad's verified uncapped plans are $11, $18, $25 and $33 for three, five, seven and ten days, under Airalo's $11.50, $19.50, $27 and $34 at every one. Holafly's indicative five-day is $19 and its fifteen-day $46.90 against Airalo's $48.50. Airalo's advantage is at the long end, where it is the only seller here above fifteen days.

No host network, and what follows from that

This page used to be titled around a network claim: Three, Eir and Vodafone. Airalo does not publish a host network for Ireland, or for any other country, and our data holds nothing for it. The line came from somewhere else and should not have been printed.

The consequence is that no coverage recommendation for Airalo in Ireland is available from us in either direction. That is worth stating because Irish coverage is not uniform, and the gaps sit exactly where visitors go. The remote Atlantic peninsulas — Dingle, Beara, Malin Head — have dead stretches. So do the Wicklow Mountains and the Connemara interior. The offshore islands, including the Arans, Cape Clear and Tory, have limited coverage on any network.

If the network genuinely decides your trip, buy at a counter where the carrier is named. Ireland makes that unusually easy: prepaid SIMs require no ID at all, so it is a rack purchase and a till, not a registration desk. Expect about $20 at the airport for Three Ireland, Vodafone Ireland or Eir. That is more than Airalo's 5GB and less than its 20GB, and it comes with an Irish number and a carrier you chose deliberately.

Do you need to buy anything?

If your phone is on an EU or EEA plan, Ireland is covered by roam-like-at-home out of your normal allowance and you should buy nothing at all. UK travellers are the awkward case: since Brexit, some UK networks reinstated roaming charges in the EU and others did not, so the answer depends on your provider — check your own tariff before assuming either way.

For US, Canadian, Australian and Asian numbers, an eSIM is almost always cheaper than home-network roaming, and Airalo's smallest plans cost less than a pint in Temple Bar.

Verdict

Airalo is a reasonable Irish default: prices we have actually verified, a ladder fine-grained enough to match a real itinerary, and the only large plans in the market. Buy Nomad instead for 10GB or 20GB, where it is now cheaper on prices we have also checked; it is no longer the cheaper 5GB, whatever this page used to say. Buy locally if you need a specific carrier for the west coast, which is the one thing no eSIM here can give you.
