Buying a SIM card at Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Jakarta

The short version

Buy at the counter. Soekarno-Hatta has three carriers competing in the same arrivals hall, Indonesian data is cheap enough that a local SIM runs around $5 in our country data, and the queue is a quarter of an hour at worst. Almost nothing you can pre-buy improves on that financially.

The case for an eSIM at CGK is convenience and nothing else — no queue after a long-haul flight, data live the moment the aircraft doors open, a ride booked before you are through customs. In Jakarta that last point carries more weight than it does anywhere else in Indonesia, and we come back to it below.

Where the counters are

Terminal 3 International is where most international arrivals clear customs, and all three carriers have counters in Terminal 3 arrivals: Telkomsel, XL and Indosat. The queue runs 12 to 15 minutes at peak.

For Terminals 1 and 2 we hold nothing at all — no counters, no locations, no hours. We also do not hold opening hours for the Terminal 3 counters. If you land in the small hours, or arrive into a terminal other than 3, treat the counter as something you may not find rather than something you can count on.

Indonesia requires a passport for prepaid registration. The counter staff handle it, which is most of what those 12 to 15 minutes consist of.

Which carrier, and why the answer is less obvious here

In central Jakarta all three networks are competitive. Unlike arriving into Bali, the choice you make at the counter will not visibly change your week if the whole week is spent in the city.

It changes things the moment you leave. Telkomsel has the widest reach across the Indonesian islands, and if Jakarta is the front door to a trip that continues to Sumatra, Sulawesi, Flores or anywhere off the main routes, taking Telkomsel at CGK saves you swapping later. If you are in Jakarta for a week of meetings and flying home, take whichever queue is shortest — that is a genuine difference between this airport and Bali, and it is worth saying rather than repeating the same advice twice.

Buying at the counter is also the only way to know which network you are actually on.

What the eSIMs cost

These are the Indonesian plans we have read directly from Airalo's own site. Airalo sells them under the retail name Indotel, which is a product name at checkout rather than a carrier — it does not tell you whose towers you will be on.

The cheapest rate in our whole Indonesian dataset is Nomad's 50 GB for 45 days at $41 — $0.82 per gigabyte — read off Nomad's own site on 17 August 2026. Airalo's verified 50 GB at $49 is next, at 98 cents. Our data also holds an eSIM Go 5 GB row at $9.50, which nobody can buy: eSIM Go sells wholesale to resellers and publishes no consumer price — checked on esim-go.com on 18 August 2026, where there is no basket, no checkout and no per-country page — so its rows cannot be bought or ever verified. On host networks: Airalo, Nomad, Saily and eSIMCard publish none for Indonesia, and eSIM Go has no consumer page on which it could — Saily's pages promise only a reliable connection from Indonesia's best networks and name no carrier. Holafly names nothing. This page used to give it Telkomsel, which came from our own data; Holafly publishes no host carrier for any country — we read its prices for 28 of them off esim.holafly.com on 18 August 2026 and not one names an operator. Getting into the city, and why data helps before you exit

The Soekarno-Hatta Airport Express reaches Manggarai Station in 51 minutes, and from Manggarai you can connect to the KRL Commuter Line for central Jakarta. It is direct and it is not affected by the tollway, which on a bad afternoon is the whole argument for taking it.

GoJek and Grab both operate extensively in Jakarta. Book your ride while you are still inside arrivals rather than after you walk out — Jakarta traffic is serious, pickup zones are busy, and standing on the kerb trying to get a new SIM to authenticate a ride-hailing app is the worst version of this. If that scenario sounds likely for your arrival, that is the case for spending $13.50 on an eSIM you will never quite need again. It is a convenience purchase, and it is fine to call it one.
