Airalo in Indonesia: verified prices, and near the top of the range

A correction before the prices

An earlier version of this page said Airalo's Indonesia eSIM ran on Telkomsel, and built an island-hopping recommendation on top of that. It should not have. Airalo does not publish a host network for Indonesia — or for anywhere else — and our data holds nothing for it.

The correction is bigger than one sentence. The old advice was: take Airalo beyond southern Bali because of the carrier underneath. Remove the carrier and the advice has no support left. Nobody reading this site, or Airalo's checkout page, can tell you which Indonesian network a given eSIM will attach to.

What is true regardless of provider is where Indonesian coverage stops. Most of the 17,000-plus outer islands have no service at all. The remote Raja Ampat dive sites, the Flores interior, most of Papua, interior Kalimantan and the remote Sumatra highlands are gaps for every network. If your trip goes to those, the question is not which eSIM but whether to plan around having no signal.

What Airalo charges

These figures were read from Airalo's own site on 13 August 2026. Saily's Indonesia prices were read the same way on 16 August 2026, Nomad's on 17 August and Holafly's on 18 August; only the eSIMCard and eSIM Go rows remain unread.

Shorter windows shave a little off: 5GB over 7 days is $12 rather than $13.50, and 10GB over 7 days is $19 rather than $21. Unlimited plans run alongside, from $11 for three days to $69 for thirty.

The gap that matters

At the sizes most Indonesia travellers buy, Airalo is near the top of the price range — second only to Saily.

At 10GB over 30 days, Nomad's verified price is $19 and Airalo's verified $21 sits above it. At 5GB over 30 days it is $13.50 against Nomad's verified $12. At 20GB it is $35 over 30 days against Nomad's $33 over 45.

The one provider Airalo undercuts is Saily, whose Indonesia prices were read off its own site on 16 August 2026: $13.99 at 5GB, $21.99 at 10GB, $35.99 at 20GB. Those are verified figures, not drift, and each is a shade above Airalo's. On an earlier pass we carried Saily at $14.99 for 10GB, which made it look like a mid-field option. It is not.

There is still a caveat on the cheap end, though a smaller one than this page used to carry. Nomad's Indonesian prices have now been read at source, and they came in several dollars above the figures we had been publishing — which is why Airalo's premium at 10GB is $2 rather than the $8 we once claimed. eSIMCard is no longer in the comparison: its rows were withdrawn on 18 August 2026 after we read its site and found ours wrong. Airalo earns some of it back at the edges. Its 50GB plan runs 98 cents a gigabyte, the second cheapest verified unit rate in the country behind Nomad's own 50GB, which is $41 over 45 days, or 82 cents. It sells three-day plans, useful on a Jakarta stopover, when most rivals start at 30-day validity you will never use. And its range has eleven metered options against two from most competitors.

Then there is the $5 local SIM

Indonesian mobile data is cheap domestically, and the eSIM market barely reflects it. A prepaid tourist SIM at Bali or Jakarta airport is around $5, and the counters sell Telkomsel, XL Axiata, Indosat Ooredoo, Smartfren and Three. That is less than Airalo's smallest plan, and it usually carries far more data.

The cost is friction. Indonesian prepaid SIMs require passport registration, which means a staffed desk, a form and a wait — sometimes twenty minutes at Denpasar arrivals with a queue in front of you. It also means swapping your physical SIM out, which travellers with a single-slot phone dislike. An eSIM needs no passport at purchase and is live before you land.

So the honest framing is not Airalo versus other eSIMs. It is: are you willing to queue with a passport to cut your data spend by two-thirds? If yes, buy locally. If no, buy an eSIM — and then Airalo is the expensive one.

Who should still buy it

Short-trip travellers, where the 3-day plans fit and the absolute cost is small either way. Heavy users at 50GB, where Airalo is unmatched. And anyone who wants the widest choice of sizes and windows, which Airalo has. What it no longer has is a price argument: of the three metered sellers whose Indonesian prices we have now checked, Nomad is cheaper than Airalo at every shared size and Saily is dearer at every one.
