Smartfren Indonesia SIM card: the 90 GB eSIM starter pack and its limits

Smartfren sells a prepaid eSIM starter pack of 90 GB for Rp180,000, valid 360 days. It is not described as a tourist product.

Is a Smartfren Indonesia SIM card a good choice for a tourist?

Probably not as a first choice, because the product we could read is not aimed at visitors and its device list is narrow. Smartfren's eSIM 90 GB page, which we read on 8 October 2026, is for prepaid eSIM customers and does not mention tourists. It links to a separate "eSIM Tourist" page that we did not read.

What does the Smartfren eSIM cost and include?

The page lists the 90 GB eSIM starter pack at Rp180,000, valid 360 days. The quota is 45 GB of 24-hour data plus 45 GB of midnight data, and calls to other Smartfren users are free. A year of validity is generous for a visitor but you pay for a lot of data you may not need.

Smartfren describes the data as 4G LTE and makes no other speed or coverage claim; it notes it may slow speeds for excessive use. It says nothing about 5G.

What are the catches?

  • Device list. The page lists iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, 12 and 12 Pro, plus several Samsung models. The list in the notes and in the terms do not match each other, so confirm your phone first.
  • One profile. A device can hold one active Smartfren eSIM profile. The QR code can be rescanned up to 10 times on the same device.
  • Moving phones. Switching to another device needs a replacement at a Smartfren Gallery, for IDR 15,000.
  • Registration. The page does not describe identity registration, and we could not read the current rules. Indonesian prepaid SIMs need registration generally, but we have not confirmed what Smartfren asks of a foreigner.

Where do you buy it?

The page names Smartfren Gallery, the mySF app, Tokopedia, Bukalapak, Shopee and Blibli. Marketplace sales from an Indonesian seller are awkward for a visitor, which is another point against it for a short trip.

Smartfren after the merger

XLSMART's site says the merger of XL Axiata and Smartfren took place in April 2025, and lists Smartfren among its brands. See the XL Axiata page for XL's tourist eSIM, which we could read in more detail.

Smartfren or a travel eSIM?

A travel eSIM is the simpler tool for a one- or two-week trip. For other Indonesian networks see Telkomsel, Indosat Ooredoo and Three (Tri). Our Indonesia SIM card comparison lays out the options, the Indonesia hub has the rest, and travel eSIM prices are on the cheapest eSIM page.
