Comparing SIM cards for Indonesia: one network decides it, then price

Ask one question first: are you leaving Bali?

If the trip is Bali and Java only, every option here works and you should buy on price. Coverage is not the constraint in Seminyak.

If the trip involves islands — Flores, Komodo, Raja Ampat, anywhere in the archipelago's long tail — the question becomes which network, and there is only one answer. Telkomsel has far the widest geographic coverage across Indonesia's islands, and reaches more remote ones than all the other carriers combined.

That is not a marginal advantage. Get it wrong and the problem is not slow data, it is no data.

A correction to the usual advice

If you have seen Airalo recommended as the outright value pick for Indonesia on the strength of a $11 ten-gigabyte plan, that figure no longer holds. When we read Airalo's own site on 13 August 2026, its 10 GB, 30-day plan for Indonesia was $21.

That changes the ranking. Nomad's verified 10 GB is $19, while Nomad's 50 GB over 45 days at $41 works out at 82 cents a gigabyte — the cheapest rate we hold for the country. Airalo's own 50 GB is $49, and it is no longer the default answer in the middle.

We also note that Airalo does not publish which Indonesian network its local eSIM connects to. The plan is sold as Indotel, but that is Airalo's own product name rather than a carrier, so there is no way to tell from the listing whether you are getting Telkomsel — and for an island itinerary that ambiguity matters.

What the eSIMs cost

Airalo's rows were read from its own site on 13 August 2026 and Saily's from its own site on 16 August 2026. The rest are listings we hold rather than checkouts we watched. Saily appears above only at 1 GB, because at every larger size it is the most expensive option we hold — $13.99 at 5 GB, $21.99 at 10 GB, $35.99 at 20 GB.

Indonesia is a cheap market by international standards, and the ladder behaves sensibly — the price per gigabyte falls steadily until it flattens around 95 cents. Buying 20 GB rather than 5 GB roughly halves your rate.

Holafly sells unlimited by the day, from $11.90 for 3 days to $73.90 for thirty, and has no hotspot. Holafly sells six windows and no others — 3, 5, 7, 10, 15 and 30 days — so the 1-day plan this page used to list does not exist. At $46.90 for a month you need about 1.6 GB a day to beat Nomad's 20 GB plan. Heavy phone users clear that; most travellers do not.

The $5 counter

A local Telkomsel SIM costs around $5, which is among the cheapest in the world, and is sold at Bali and Jakarta airports and in Indomaret and Alfamart convenience stores nationwide.

A passport is required, and tourist registration is completed at the point of purchase — so unlike some countries, you walk out with a working SIM rather than a promise.

The arithmetic is uncomfortable for the eSIMs. At $5, the local SIM undercuts every travel plan on the board before you count a single gigabyte, and it puts you unambiguously on Telkomsel rather than on a reseller label. For anyone staying more than a fortnight, or going island-hopping, it is the better buy. Those pay this site nothing and it is still true.

The counter-argument is convenience: no queue, no passport scan, no hunting for an Indomaret at midnight, and data live the moment you land.

Where nothing works

National average speed is around 25 Mbps. The gaps are geographic rather than technical, and they are large: most of the 17,000-plus outer islands have no coverage at all. Nor do the remote Raja Ampat dive sites, the interior of Flores, most of Papua, interior Kalimantan, or the remote Sumatra highlands.

Even mainstream destinations are affected — parts of the Gili Islands and some areas around Komodo have limited coverage. Download offline maps and confirm boat and dive arrangements while you still have signal on the mainland.

Verdict

Bali or Java, under two weeks: the cheapest plan that fits. Nomad's 5 GB at $12 covers most fortnights.

Island-hopping, or any trip east of Lombok: a local Telkomsel SIM at around $5, for the certainty rather than the saving.

Tethering a laptop: Nomad's 20 GB at $19, and avoid Holafly, which does not permit hotspot.
