Yogyakarta: an easy city, with two things worth preparing

Most of a Yogyakarta trip needs no special planning

This is a short page on purpose. Yogyakarta's connectivity is reasonable in the city and at the main heritage sites, and for the standard circuit — the Sultan's kraton, the streets around Malioboro, Prambanan — it is not meaningfully different from the rest of urban Java. Prambanan, 17 km out, has good coverage from Telkomsel and XL. Nothing on that itinerary needs a bigger plan than a city break anywhere else in Indonesia.

Three GB to five GB covers a Yogyakarta stay comfortably. If that is your whole trip, buy the cheapest plan on the table below that lasts your dates and move on.

Book Borobudur before you arrive

The sunrise experience at Borobudur — the world's largest Buddhist temple, and the reason most people come to Yogyakarta at all — requires advance booking through the official Borobudur Park website or an authorised agent. The booking system is online only, and it is slow over a mobile connection.

Do it before you get to Yogyakarta, on hotel Wi-Fi or a fixed line. This is not a connectivity problem you can solve by buying more data; it is a slow website, and fighting it from a phone on a 25 Mbps average national connection is a miserable way to spend an evening. It is also the one task on this trip with a hard deadline attached, because sunrise slots sell out.

Merapi is the only real coverage question

Mount Merapi, one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes, is a popular guided trek from the city. Kaliurang, the base camp, has coverage. The higher-elevation routes have intermittent signal, and Telkomsel reaches further up the slopes than the alternatives.

That matters more here than a patchy signal usually does, because Merapi runs live alert levels and real-time volcanic activity updates are published through BNPB Indonesia's official channels. Check them before you set out, from somewhere with a working connection, rather than assuming you can refresh the page halfway up. Your guide will be tracking this too — but the check costs nothing and the phone is not a reliable way to do it above the base camp.

Networks and what to buy

Telkomsel has the widest geographic reach in Indonesia, which is why it is the name that keeps appearing on the slopes and the outer islands. Which travel eSIM actually connects to it is a different question, and one we cannot answer: Holafly names Telkomsel in its own Indonesian listing, unconfirmed by us, Airalo, Nomad and Saily publish no host network for Indonesia at all, and we hold no read of eSIMCard's Indonesian listing — Saily's pages promise a reliable connection from Indonesia's best networks and stop there. Airalo's Indonesian plans are sold as Indotel, which is a product name rather than a carrier.

A local SIM is cheaper still. A typical Indonesian airport SIM runs about $5, and Indonesia requires your passport for registration, so it is a counter transaction rather than a tap on your phone. If you are flying into Yogyakarta after time elsewhere in Indonesia, you will likely have sorted this already.
