Telkomsel Indonesia SIM card: how a foreign visitor registers

Telkomsel says foreign visitors register a prepaid SIM with a passport, KITAS or KITAP at an operator outlet. Its tourist product pages would not load for us.

Is a Telkomsel Indonesia SIM card a good choice for a visitor?

Our network notes name Telkomsel as the best tourist network in Indonesia, mainly for reach beyond Bali and Java. We could not confirm that from Telkomsel's own site, so treat it as a lead. What we can confirm is how a foreigner registers a prepaid Telkomsel SIM, and that registering is not optional. If you plan to island-hop, that reach question is worth checking on Telkomsel's coverage map before you buy anything.

How does a foreigner register a Telkomsel prepaid SIM?

Telkomsel's FAQ for foreign citizens says to bring a passport, a KITAS (temporary stay permit card) or a KITAP (permanent stay permit card) to a telco operator outlet or its partners. Staff record your full name, document number, citizenship, and date and place of birth. The page links a "Find GraPARI" locator but does not say which outlets handle foreign registration, how long it takes or what the opening hours are.

So a Telkomsel prepaid SIM is, on this evidence, a shop purchase with a passport. The page does not say whether you can register from abroad, and does not mention a limit on how many SIMs one passport can register.

What about the Telkomsel tourist SIM and Telkomsel eSIM?

Telkomsel's site lists pages for a tourist prepaid card, a SIMPATI tourist card and a tourist eSIM. When we tried to open them on 8 October 2026 the site refused our requests, so we cannot report prices, data, validity or where they are sold. Do not take figures from third-party sites as Telkomsel's; open Telkomsel's pages in a browser, or ask at a GraPARI, for today's offer.

What does Telkomsel say about coverage?

Nothing we could read. The pages we opened make no 4G or 5G coverage claim, so we have no Telkomsel figures to quote. The safest approach is Telkomsel's own coverage map for the islands on your route.

Telkomsel or a travel eSIM?

A travel eSIM installed before you fly works on landing and needs no queue or passport scan, which matters at a busy arrivals hall. Telkomsel's reach may matter more if you head to remote islands, where your plan options narrow. Weigh both on the Bali and Bali airport pages. For other Indonesian networks see XL Axiata, Indosat Ooredoo, Smartfren and Three (Tri). Our Indonesia SIM card comparison lays out the options, the Indonesia hub has the rest, and travel eSIM prices are on the cheapest eSIM page.

Common questions

Can a tourist buy a Telkomsel Indonesia SIM card?

Telkomsel says foreigners register prepaid SIMs at a telco operator outlet or partner with a passport, KITAS or KITAP. Staff record your name, document number, citizenship and birth details. The page does not name outlets, so use Telkomsel's GraPARI locator.

What ID do I need for a Telkomsel prepaid SIM as a foreigner?

A passport, KITAS or KITAP, according to Telkomsel's FAQ for foreign citizens. The page does not mention a phone IMEI or a limit on SIMs per passport, so ask the outlet about any extra requirements.

Does Telkomsel have a tourist eSIM?

Its site lists a tourist eSIM page, but the page would not load for us on 8 October 2026. We cannot report its price, data or conditions. Check Telkomsel directly.

Is Telkomsel the best network in Indonesia for tourists?

Our network notes say so, citing reach across remote islands, but we could not verify that on Telkomsel's site. Check Telkomsel's coverage map for your route, especially away from Bali and Java.

Is a travel eSIM easier than a Telkomsel SIM?

For a short trip, usually yes: you install it before you fly and need no outlet visit. A Telkomsel SIM can suit longer stays or remote routes, if you can complete the passport registration.
