Buying a SIM card at Cam Ranh International Airport (CXR)

One counter, one carrier

Cam Ranh's arrivals SIM counter carries Viettel, and in our records that is the whole retail landscape at CXR. No Mobifone desk, no Vinaphone desk. The queue is short — around 10 minutes at peak, about 3 off-peak — and you will need your passport, because Vietnamese prepaid lines are registered against a document and the desk does that in front of you.

Our data holds a typical airport SIM price of about $7. It does not hold what allowance comes with it, so read that as the cost of getting a working Vietnamese number rather than a package to compare gigabyte for gigabyte against a data plan.

What we do not hold for Cam Ranh is opening hours, which is the fact you would most want. Da Nang and Noi Bai both close their counters at 22:00 and Phu Quoc closes earlier still, so it would be optimistic to assume this one runs late. If your flight lands at night, plan as though the desk will be dark. We also hold no terminal-level detail — not which hall it sits in, not how it is signposted.

The 35 km transfer is the real argument

Cam Ranh is not a city airport. Nha Trang is 35 km up the coast, and that drive is where a working phone earns its money: summoning a car in an app rather than negotiating at the kerb, watching the route, and messaging a hotel that is expecting you at an hour you can no longer predict.

That is a stronger case for arriving connected than the queue ever makes. Ten minutes at a counter is nothing. Standing outside a terminal 35 km from where you are staying with no data at all is a different kind of problem, and it is the one worth spending five minutes on before you fly.

Where a single-carrier counter is actually a feature

At most airports, one network on offer is a limitation. Here it is arguably the right one. Viettel has the broadest reputation for reach outside Vietnam's cities, and this coast is where that reputation was earned — the resort strips north and south of Nha Trang sit well away from the city itself.

Set against that, do not overbuy on the coverage argument. Nha Trang trips mostly go out to sea, and the open water between the city and the islands has no signal from any carrier. A better network does not fix a boat.

If which network you use genuinely matters to your plans, the Cam Ranh counter is the only reliable way to choose it. Travel eSIMs will not tell you: Airalo does not publish a host network for Vietnam at all, and the other providers publish only their own listings, none of which has been confirmed against the carriers. There is no product page you can check to be sure of Viettel. There is only the physical SIM.

What the alternatives cost

The pattern is the same across Vietnam: the small plans are cheap to buy and dear to use, and the rate improves the whole way up. A verified 50 GB at $49 is $0.98 a gigabyte against $2.90 at the entry tier. Nomad's 50 GB is $39, better again per gigabyte at $0.78, and that row was read from Nomad's own site on 17 August 2026 rather than being the indicative figure this page previously carried.
