Cần Thơ data: the most reliably offline place in Vietnam

Cần Thơ city is not the issue

The Mekong Delta's capital is a normal Vietnamese city as far as your phone is concerned. Grab operates here, coverage in town is fine, and prices are national — see the Vietnam hub for the comparison. Nothing about staying in Cần Thơ requires a different plan from anywhere else in the country.

The water is the exception, and it is a real one.

The canals go offline, consistently

Cái Răng floating market is six kilometres upstream, and the market itself takes place on the water. Signal on the river is intermittent. Push further into the canal network and the smaller waterways and it becomes the most consistently offline tourist experience in Vietnam — not a patchy stretch or a bad afternoon, but a predictable absence.

This is worth taking seriously precisely because it is predictable. You are not gambling on whether you will lose signal in the canals; you are planning around the fact that you will. Download offline maps of the canal network before any boat tour, along with your tour confirmation and anything else you would otherwise look up en route.

It also means the plan you buy is beside the point out there. No amount of data helps in a place where there is no service to carry it, and no provider in our data claims a delta advantage. What matters is what is already on the phone when you push off from the bank.

The five in the morning problem

Cái Răng is best seen between 5 and 7am, which means leaving your guesthouse in the dark, often for a pickup point you have never seen, before anything is open.

Do the downloading the night before. At 4.45am, half asleep, with a driver waiting, is the wrong time to discover that your navigation needs a connection your accommodation's wifi is no longer giving you. Save the route to the boat, the guesthouse's own location for the return, and the tour operator's phone number as an actual contact rather than a line in an email you would need to fetch.

What to buy

Cần Thơ is usually one or two nights inside a longer Vietnamese trip, most often out of Ho Chi Minh City, so buy for the trip rather than the delta. One plan covers both.
