Ha Long Bay: the one place in Vietnam where the carrier decides it

Why this page is different from the other Vietnamese city pages

Everywhere else in Vietnam, the sensible advice is to buy the cheapest plan with enough data and stop worrying about carriers. Ha Long is where that stops being true.

The standard trip is a 2-day/1-night or 3-day/2-night cruise, which means a substantial stretch offshore, away from the shore-based cells that make the rest of the country easy. Our coverage data credits Viettel as the only reliable carrier out on the bay. That is a genuine local difference, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a plan table. What you actually get on the water

Signal on cruise boats is available near the shore and in the areas closer to Cat Ba Island. Move away from populated areas into the deep karst channels and it goes. Inside the big cave systems — Thiên Cung and Sung Sốt interiors — there is nothing, as you would expect of a cave.

So it is not a blackout. It is patchy, and the patches follow the itinerary rather than the clock: you may have a decent connection at the first anchorage and none at the second. Most cruise boats also have wifi on deck at anchor, which for many people is enough on its own.

What that connection is for matters too. The cruise operator handles all the navigation, so nothing about getting where you are going depends on your phone. Data on a Ha Long cruise is for uploading photographs, messaging people at home, and checking the weather — the last of which is not trivial in typhoon season, July to November.

Why an eSIM cannot promise you Viettel

This is the part where we have to be honest about the limits of what we hold.

Airalo does not publish a host network for Vietnam at all. Nor does Holafly, whose GPC Vinaphone entry came from our data rather than from the seller. the Mobifone name our data once carried against eSIMCard's rows came from our own generated text, and it is not Viettel either way — so nothing we hold puts an eSIM on the carrier our coverage data actually credits with the bay.

A recommendation cannot rest on a network nobody has confirmed. So if being reachable offshore genuinely matters to you — a work call you cannot miss, a family situation at home, an early flight to rebook — buy a local Viettel SIM in Hanoi before you take the bus east. Do not buy unlimited for the cruise

A tempting mistake. The constraint on a Ha Long cruise is coverage, not allowance — an unlimited plan buys you nothing extra in a karst channel with no signal, and you are on the boat for one or two nights.

If you are doing Hanoi plus a cruise, a normal week's plan covers it. Airalo's verified 5 GB over 7 days at $10 is a sensible shape, and Saily's verified 3 GB over 30 days at $7.99 is the cheaper one if you are mostly on boat and hotel wifi. If you want a short high-usage window for another reason, the verified 3-day unlimited is $11.50, but buy it for the city, not the bay.

Before you board

Treat the cruise as an offline trip with occasional bars of signal, and prepare accordingly:

• Download anything you need for the overnight while you are still on land.
• Send the people at home your itinerary and tell them you may be out of contact for stretches.
• Check the weather before departure rather than expecting to track a storm from the deck. Typhoon season runs July to November.
• Save photographs to upload later. Trying to push a large batch from a channel with one bar is the fastest way to flatten a battery.

Most people find the disconnection is the good part. Prepare for it and it costs you nothing.
