A sightseeing city you cover by motorbike

Huế was Vietnam's imperial capital, and its sights are laid out accordingly. The Imperial Citadel is in town, but the royal tombs are spread across more than ten kilometres of surrounding countryside and Thiên Mụ Pagoda sits out along the Perfume River. Most visitors rent a motorbike or hire a xe om driver to string them together.

That is what makes Huế's connectivity question different from Hanoi's or Saigon's. In those cities you are online while standing still, booking a ride. Here you are navigating between sites on rural roads, on a bike, deciding which tomb to do next — the phone is being used in motion, out of town, several times a day.

On the tomb roads

Signal in the city and along the main roads out to the tombs is good on Viettel. That covers the standard circuit and most of what a two-day visit involves.

The exceptions are the further sites. The Tomb of Minh Mạng, up river from the others, has reduced signal, and it is not the only one out that far. None of this leaves you stranded — the roads are roads and the sites are signposted — but it does mean you should not plan to look up opening hours or find the next tomb once you are already out there. Save the day's route offline before you set off, the same way you would for any rural riding.

Flood season is the real local factor

Central Vietnam's rainfall is extreme from October to December and Huế floods regularly during that period. This is not an occasional event to be filed under bad luck — it is a normal feature of the season, and it changes what your phone is for.

In a flood week, connectivity buys you real-time water level and weather information, plus the ability to find out whether a road, a train or a tour is running. That is a different requirement from checking a restaurant review. If you are visiting between October and December, arrive already connected rather than planning to sort out a SIM once you are settled in, and keep offline copies of your onward tickets and accommodation details.

What to buy

Huế is normally two or three days as part of the central circuit with Da Nang and Hội An, so buy for the circuit rather than the city. One Vietnamese plan covers all three; there is no reason to buy separately for each stop.
