Nha Trang data: fine in town, gone on the water

In town, there is nothing to solve

Nha Trang city has good signal, prices are national, and no part of a beach-and-restaurants stay here needs special planning. If you have data that works elsewhere in Vietnam, it works here. The Vietnam hub has the price comparison.

The one thing this city does differently is send you out to sea, several times, in daylight.

The island trips

Island hopping is the main activity — Mun Island, Mot Island, Tam Island, Bamboo Island, usually as a single day tour taking in several. The open ocean between the city and the islands has no signal at all.

That sounds worse than it is. These are day trips: you leave in the morning and you are back in the city by evening, so the offline stretch is measured in hours and the boat is going back whether your phone works or not. It is a very different situation from a Ha Long Bay cruise, where the offshore leg is overnight and the case for choosing your carrier carefully is real.

The practical preparation is small. Download your boat tour confirmation, any island map you intend to use, and anything you want to listen to or read on the crossing, before you board. Tell anyone expecting to hear from you that they will not, for the day.

Hon Tre and the cable car

Hon Tre Island — Vinpearl Land, reached by the world's longest overwater cable car — has limited coverage on the island itself. Plan on the assumption that you will be hard to reach while you are there, and agree a meeting point with anyone in your group before you split up, rather than expecting to coordinate by message.

The cable car has signal at both terminals and is intermittent during the crossing, which is chiefly relevant if you were hoping to post the view live. Take the photographs and send them when you land.

Arriving at Cam Ranh

Nha Trang is served by Cam Ranh International Airport, 35 kilometres from the city. There is a Viettel counter in arrivals, with a peak queue of about ten minutes and roughly three off-peak, and a passport is required for registration. Free wifi is generally available throughout the airport, so you can connect and decide in the terminal rather than in the queue.

What to buy

A week in Nha Trang uses very little data. You are on a beach, in restaurants, and on boats with no signal — the phone gets used for maps, bookings and photographs rather than continuous browsing.

The carrier question that matters in northern Vietnam does not really bite here. City coverage is good, and the gaps offshore are gaps for everyone.
