Buying a SIM card at Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN)

Counters that do not close

Tan Son Nhat is the only airport in Vietnam we hold a 24-hour record for. Noi Bai and Da Nang shut their counters at 22:00, Phu Quoc closes earlier still, and at each of those the advice writes itself for a night arrival. At SGN you can land at 03:40 and still buy a line before you reach the taxi rank.

Arrivals carries Viettel, Mobifone and Vinaphone. The wait is about 15 minutes at peak and around 5 off-peak — mid-range for Vietnam, and short of Noi Bai's 20. You will need your passport: Vietnamese prepaid lines are registered against a document, and that registration is most of what the queue is. Our data holds a typical airport SIM price of about $7 and nothing about what allowance comes with it, so it is a price for a working number rather than a package you can compare per gigabyte.

One caveat on "24 hours". That is what the record says about the counters; it does not say all three carriers staff their desks overnight, and we hold no terminal-level detail — not which hall the desks sit in, not how many of them are open at four in the morning. A single desk at that hour would still beat a closed one, but do not plan on a choice of network.

What that does to the eSIM argument

Most of the case for arriving in Vietnam already connected is an opening-hours case. At Noi Bai it is the 22:00 close, on Phu Quoc it is an island counter that shuts early. Strip that away and what is left at SGN is fifteen minutes, a passport scan, and the price — a much weaker argument, and worth saying plainly rather than pretending otherwise.

What remains true is the first hour. Ho Chi Minh City is a Grab city, and a working data connection at the kerb is the difference between an app-priced ride and negotiating one. An eSIM that comes up as the doors open handles that; a counter you have to find and queue at does not, however long it stays open.

So the honest framing at SGN is not "buy before you fly or you are stuck". It is that you have a genuine fallback here at any hour, which is unusual in Vietnam, and the pre-installed eSIM buys you convenience rather than rescuing you.

The price gap, and where it is widest

The rate falls the whole way down that list. Small plans are cheap to buy and expensive to use — around $2.50 a gigabyte at the 3 GB tier — while Nomad's verified 50 GB at $39 works out at $0.78 and Airalo's verified $49 at $0.98. Anyone staying a month should look at the bottom of the ladder before assuming a mid-size plan is the sensible compromise; it usually is not. Short stops have a different shape. If you are in the city for two or three days on business, an unlimited plan makes more sense than metering yourself: Airalo's unlimited 3-day is $11.50, verified on 13 August 2026.

Which network you end up on barely matters here

Viettel's advantage in Vietnam is rural and remote reach — the northern highlands, the islands. In District 1 it is not a live question; all three networks at the counter cover Ho Chi Minh City densely.

That is convenient, because the network of a travel eSIM is not something you can check. Airalo, Saily and Nomad publish no host network for Vietnam at all. Holafly publishes nothing either. The Mobifone name our data carried against eSIMCard's Vietnamese rows came from this site's generated text rather than from eSIMCard, and has gone with its prices — it is the only one of the six that publishes a host network at all, so its own listing is the place to look. Either way, it is not Viettel. If your trip continues to Phu Quoc or the far north, that gap starts to matter and a physical SIM is the only way to close it. For a stay in the city, it does not.
