Holafly in Italy: its cheapest market, and still second

The product in one paragraph

Holafly's Italy eSIM is unlimited data, sold by trip length rather than by gigabyte, on a network it does not name. This page used to describe a three-network listing across TIM, Vodafone and WindTre and call it the main thing Holafly was selling; that came from our own data rather than from Holafly, which names no carrier in any country. What is left is the unlimited allowance itself. There is no hotspot and no data cap to manage.

Italy and Spain are the two cheapest countries Holafly sells. The $64.50 month is $9.40 below the $73.90 it charges across most of Europe and about half what it asks in Albania. If you were going to buy Holafly anywhere, this is the market where the sticker price is least painful.

A correction. This page previously listed nine Italian rows, from a one-day plan at $5.90 to a 90-day at $139.90, plus a 14-day at $42.90 that we flagged as suspect because it cost more than the 15-day. Holafly sells six durations — 3, 5, 7, 10, 15 and 30 days — and none of the others exist. The prices we printed for the real durations were wrong in both directions: five days is $17.50 rather than $19.90, and ten days is $32.90 rather than $29.90. That last error is why this page used to tell you Holafly won from ten days upward.

The curve is smooth. There is no bargain rung and no trap: every step up buys a slightly better daily rate.

Where it wins, and where it loses by pennies

A long, multi-region Italian itinerary — Milan, Venice, Florence, Rome, Naples, the Amalfi Coast in ten to fourteen days — crosses several different network environments, and unlimited data removes one decision from the trip: no rationing maps, no watching a counter while you navigate a coast road.

But unlimited is not automatically cheaper than unlimited. Airalo's and Nomad's Italian ladders were both read off their own sites.

Airalo is cheaper at all six, but only by 50 to 90 cents — the closest Holafly comes to parity in any of the 44 countries we have read. Nomad is dearer than Holafly at five, seven and ten days, which is unusual: in most of Europe Nomad is the cheapest uncapped seller by several dollars, and in Italy it is not.

So Italy is the one market where the choice between Holafly and Airalo is genuinely a coin toss on price. It is decided by other things: Holafly blocks tethering, and Airalo's prices are the ones we have checked more than once.

And if you are not a heavy user, neither is the right answer. Airalo's 10GB / 30-day plan is $19 verified, Nomad's is $18.50, and 20GB / 30 days is $26 from Airalo or $25 from Nomad. Most two-week travellers do not get near 20GB.

Where it loses outright

The hotspot. Holafly Italy does not do tethering. Couples sharing one connection, anyone working from a laptop, families with a tablet — all ruled out. This is not a setting you can toggle, and it is the single clearest reason to buy elsewhere when the prices are within a dollar.

At 30 days for $64.50 you would also need to be using well over 90GB before unlimited beat a fixed-data plan: Airalo and Nomad both sell 50GB for 30 days at $35, which is 70 cents a gigabyte.

Verdict

If you want uncapped Italian data and you will not tether, Holafly is a fair buy — this is its cheapest market and it is within a dollar of Airalo at every length. That is as close to a recommendation as its pricing gets anywhere.

It is still not the cheapest. Airalo undercuts it at all six durations, permits tethering, and sells 50GB for $35 if you would rather not pay $64.50 for headroom you will not use.
