Saily's Italy eSIM: wins on the small plans, loses on the big ones

What you actually pay

Every Saily price below was read from Saily's own site on 13 August 2026, so these are the figures we stand behind rather than estimates.

Data only. No calls and no SMS are included, so anything that needs a phone number — a restaurant confirmation, a two-factor code to your home number — still goes through your normal SIM. WhatsApp and the rest run over data as usual. Saily's listing says hotspot tethering is allowed on all its Italy plans, which keeps it in play if a laptop needs the connection.

One quirk of the range is worth planning around: everything above 1GB is a 30-day plan. There is no 7-day or 15-day mid-tier, so a couple on a ten-day trip through Rome and Florence pays the monthly rate whether they want it or not.

The network, and why we will not name one

Saily does not publish which Italian network its eSIM attaches to, and we have not established it independently. That is not a gap peculiar to Saily. Our Italy data holds no host network for any travel eSIM sold here. Airalo, Nomad and Holafly publish none on their own pages either, and the Italian carriers our data once carried against Holafly's rows came from our own older text rather than from Holafly. eSIMCard does publish host carriers on its country pages, confirmed on its Japanese one, but we have not read its page for this country and hold no network for it here, and eSIM Go has no consumer page on which it could publish anything: eSIM Go sells wholesale to resellers and publishes no consumer price — checked on esim-go.com on 18 August 2026, where there is no basket, no checkout and no per-country page — so its rows cannot be bought or ever verified. The practical consequence: do not buy this plan for a particular network's coverage, because you will not know what your phone has attached to until you land and look.

Italy forgives that more than most countries. The three national networks all cover the cities, the motorways and the main tourist routes properly. The places where coverage genuinely thins out are the same for everyone: cliff sections and road tunnels on the Amalfi Coast, the trail between the Cinque Terre villages, remote Dolomite hiking routes, the interior of Calabria and Basilicata, and the smaller Sicilian islands. How Saily prices against the rest

At the small end Saily is first. Its 1GB at $3.99 runs seven days; Airalo's 1GB costs a cent more at $4.00 and expires in three, and on a long weekend those extra four days are the whole point. Nomad's 1GB over seven days is $4.00, verified on 17 August 2026 and a penny above Saily's — the figure this page carried before was our own and too high.

The 3GB tier does not go the same way, and this page used to say it did. Nomad's verified $7.00 undercuts Saily's $8.99 by nearly two dollars over the same month. Airalo does sell 3GB for $7.00 as well, but only for three days.

From 5GB up, the ranking inverts.

And the gap widens further up. Airalo and Nomad both sell a verified 50GB for 30 days at $35, which works out at $0.70 per GB — half Saily's best rate on its largest plan. If you are a heavy user, or two people sharing over a hotspot for a fortnight, Saily is simply not the value option in Italy.

Before you buy anything: EU roaming and the local SIM

If you are travelling to Italy from another EU or EEA country, your existing SIM already roams at your home rates. Buy nothing. This page is for visitors from outside that bloc.

For everyone else, the local alternative is a prepaid Italian SIM. Airport counters run around $18, and Italian registration rules mean you must show a passport or ID and have it recorded — that is a form and a queue on arrival, not a grab-and-go purchase. Saily's 5GB for $12.99 undercuts the airport price, installs before you fly and skips the counter entirely. On value against the local carriers, Saily's mid-tier holds up better than it does against Airalo.

The verdict

Buy Saily for Italy if your trip is short and your usage is light: the $3.99 week of 1GB and the $8.99 3GB month are the best prices in our table at those sizes, and hotspot support comes with them.

Skip it if you need 5GB or more. Airalo's verified prices are lower at every tier from there up, and dramatically lower at 50GB. Skip it too if your decision depends on which Italian network you get, because nobody selling travel eSIMs here will tell you.
