Local Italian SIM or travel eSIM: the arithmetic

Start by checking whether you need to buy anything

Italy is in the EU. If your everyday plan was issued anywhere in the EU or EEA, roam-like-at-home applies and you use your normal allowance at your normal price. No purchase, no comparison, nothing to read past this paragraph. Everyone else — arriving from the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, most of Asia — has a genuine choice to make, and it comes down to two things: how long you are staying and whether your phone takes an eSIM.

What a local Italian SIM costs and requires

The national carriers are TIM, Vodafone Italy, WindTre, Iliad Italy and Fastweb Mobile. Our figure for a SIM bought at an Italian airport is about $18. In the cities the same carriers sell prepaid far more cheaply — Iliad is the cheapest of the city options — and the gap between airport and high-street pricing is the widest of any decision on this page.

One rule applies everywhere: a passport or ID document is required to register a prepaid SIM in Italy. That means a counter, a form and a wait. It is not onerous, but it rules out the "grab one in five minutes" pattern that works in some other countries.

What the travel eSIMs cost

The Airalo, Saily, Nomad and Holafly rows were read from the providers' own checkouts — Airalo's and Saily's on 13 August 2026, Nomad's on 17 August and Holafly's on 18 August. The rest are indicative and worth re-checking at the point of purchase. The Holafly row is a correction as well as an update: this table used to show a one-day plan at $5.90 running on TIM, Vodafone and WindTre. Holafly sells no one-day plan in any country, and it publishes no host network in any country either. Both the price and the carriers came from our own data, and both have gone.

Not one of those six publishes a host network at all. Airalo sells its Italian plan as Mamma Mia, which is its product name rather than a carrier, and it names no network for any country. Saily names none either. Nomad is the same, and this table used to say otherwise: it carried two Italian operators in Nomad's network column, which came from our own generated data rather than from Nomad, and checking Nomad's real prices is what brought it to light.

Cost per gigabyte, which is where it gets interesting

Entry prices are nearly identical across providers. The spread only opens up at volume:

The best rate on that list is a little over a third of the worst. If you are buying more than about 10 GB, the 50 GB plans are the only ones that change the economics, and Airalo and Nomad price theirs identically at $35 — both verified, both a month long.

Holafly is the outlier: unlimited data, sold in six fixed lengths rather than by gigabyte, and no hotspot. Its verified Italian ladder is $11.90 for 3 days, $17.50 for 5, $23.90 for 7, $32.90 for 10, $44.50 for 15 and $64.50 for 30 — within a dollar of Airalo's verified unlimited at every length, and never below it. The hotspot restriction matters more than people expect: if you tether a laptop or share with a travelling companion, it disqualifies the plan outright.

Which network you are actually on

TIM has the widest rural reach in Italy, roughly 99% 4G, and is the one to want for the south and for island travel. Vodafone Italy is the fastest, at 63.8 Mbps average download in Opensignal's December 2025 figures, and is the better pick if your trip is Milan, Florence and Rome. WindTre is strong in cities with significant rural gaps. The national average across all networks is 52 Mbps.

Known gaps to plan around: the southern interior of Basilicata and inland Calabria, the Sicilian interior plateau, inland Sardinia, and Apennine hiking routes. Some mountain side roads around Lake Como and Lake Garda drop out too.

The verdict

Short trip, city-focused, eSIM-capable phone: buy an eSIM before you fly. Two weeks or more, or heavy data: a local city SIM will beat every eSIM on this page on price per gigabyte, at the cost of a passport and a shop visit. Anywhere rural or southern, where the carrier genuinely decides whether your phone works: buy a local SIM and choose the carrier yourself, because no travel eSIM sold for Italy will tell you which one you get.
