eSIMCard in France: the recommendation and the prices have both gone

Everything this page recommended has now been retracted

An earlier version opened by telling you eSIMCard ran on two named French carriers and recommended it as the widest-coverage option for tourists. That claim came out of generated prose rather than from eSIMCard, and it went first. What is left of the original argument — its two French prices — has now gone the same way. Both rows are out of the table here and out of the cheapest-per-gigabyte ranking across the site.

They used to carry an indicative label — our figure, not read off a live checkout, but presumed to be somewhere near the mark. On 18 August 2026 we read eSIMCard's own pages, and that presumption failed. The entry plan our data priced identically across fifteen unrelated countries sells for well under half of it on eSIMCard's Japanese page, and the sizes we listed match neither of the tiers it actually offers. A figure you have checked and found wrong is not indicative; it is wrong.

We could not put the right prices in their place either. Our records hold a plan as four things — provider, size, days, price — and eSIMCard's catalogue does not resolve to four things. A Standard/Universal toggle swaps its whole range between two product lines, each plan carries a speed-limit flag that only appears inside its own details modal, and the carrier list varies from plan to plan. One price per size would have merged a throttled plan and a full-speed one into a single row. Our eSIMCard page sets out the full reasoning.

What an eSIM for France actually costs

Data only, and what that costs you in France

No calls and no SMS are included. Messaging over data works normally — WhatsApp, Signal, iMessage, the French restaurant booking apps — but two things break.

The first is SMS two-factor codes. If your bank texts you a code, it goes to your home number, so keep your usual SIM active alongside the eSIM in the second slot rather than removing it. The second is voice calls to French landlines, which still come up more in France than travellers expect: small hotels outside the cities, gîtes, and restaurants that take bookings by phone and not by app. A data-only plan cannot make that call.

Neither is a reason to avoid an eSIM. Both are reasons to know before you land, and they apply equally to every provider in this comparison.

Where French coverage thins out, whoever you buy from

The honest version of the coverage section is that it is not provider-specific, because we do not know any provider's network. What we can say is where mobile signal in France is unreliable in general: high Alpine hiking routes above the treeline, the rural Massif Central, remote parts of the Pyrenees, mountain areas of Corsica, and stretches of rural Brittany.

If your trip goes into any of those, the useful precautions are the ones that work regardless of carrier — download offline maps before you leave the valley, and do not plan to rely on live navigation on mountain roads. If knowing your exact network genuinely matters to you, the only way to control it is a French prepaid SIM bought locally, around $15, from Orange France, SFR, Bouygues Telecom or Free Mobile. You will need your passport, since French registration requires ID.

What eSIMCard still does that nobody else does

eSIMCard is the only one of the six sellers on this site that publishes the host network at all. We read that directly: its Japan page names three Japanese operators against its plans, in a Supported Countries & Networks block. Airalo, Nomad, Saily and Holafly name no operator in any country, and eSIM Go has no consumer page on which it could. That is a genuine difference, and the price check left it untouched.

The carriers our own records held against its rows here came from this site's generated text rather than from eSIMCard, so those are ours to withdraw and not its claim to defend. Its own country listing is the place to look. France is not a country where the answer changes much — the four national networks all cover the cities and the TGV routes — but it is the one question no rival will answer at any price.

Verdict

We have no French price for eSIMCard and will not print one until its catalogue can be stored properly. That is a gap in our records rather than a verdict on the shop, which has a working checkout and a range far wider than the two rows we published.

If you hold an EU or EEA number, buy nothing: roam-like-at-home covers France on your domestic allowance and no eSIM improves on it. Everyone else should start from the verified table above and the France hub.
