York: the city is fine, the moors are not

Why you need data here at all

York has more medieval buildings per square kilometre than anywhere in Europe, and it is small enough to cross on foot in twenty minutes. You could imagine navigating it without a phone. In practice the data goes on booking rather than navigating: York Minster tower tours sell out and are booked on your phone, Shambles Market event tickets are digital, and the Shambles itself — the street that inspired Diagon Alley — is busy enough that queue-jumping via a pre-booked slot is the difference between seeing something and standing in a line.

So a small plan, used for booking and photographs, is the shape of a York trip.

What the numbers look like

Coverage in York city is good: 38 Mbps average on 4G, around 90 Mbps on 5G. That is below the UK average of 53 Mbps and comfortably below London, Manchester or Edinburgh, and it will make no practical difference to anything you do. EE is the strongest network in York, matching its national lead of 99.8% 4G population coverage and 77.4% 5G availability.

The dead zones are all outside the walls, and they are worth listing properly:

• North York Moors interior roads
• Some Yorkshire Dales valleys
• Scarborough cliff paths

These are not marginal. Moorland and steep-sided dales are among the genuine coverage gaps in England, in the same category as remote Lake District valleys and parts of Cornwall. EE maintains the best rural Yorkshire reach of the four networks, which makes it the sensible default if a car is involved.

If you are staying in York and taking the train, buy small. If you are hiring a car for the Moors and the Dales, buy for the driving, because navigation is the heavy data use and the places where you most want it are the places with the weakest signal.

One habit matters more than plan size out here: download offline maps for the whole route before you leave York. Losing signal on a moorland road is normal, not a fault, and offline maps make it a non-issue.

Buying a SIM in York

UK SIMs need no ID and no registration — you buy one and it works. There are carrier stores in the city centre and a Tesco nearby, and both routes take a few minutes. A UK SIM at an airport is about $10, while giffgaff and Smarty PAYG bundles run roughly £5–10 for 5–10GB, which beats every travel eSIM on price per gigabyte for stays of a week or more.

Most people arriving in York have come through Manchester, Leeds or London first, and will already have sorted this out. If not, it is a five-minute errand.

When York is busy

The Viking Festival in February is a popular niche event and fills the city for its run. Christmas at York, from November into January, includes one of the best Christmas markets in the UK and packs the centre. Neither brings the network to its knees the way a major festival does, but both make the Shambles and the Minster area slow-moving.

Book and screenshot in advance during those periods, and you will not notice.

Verdict
