eSIMCard in Romania: no plan of ours, so price it against these

The short version

Our Romania dataset holds four eSIM brands. eSIMCard is not one of them. There is no eSIMCard plan here at any size, price or duration, and we would rather print that sentence than a number nobody has checked.

So this page does the only useful thing left: it tells you what a Romania eSIM costs from the providers we can price, precisely enough that you can hold an eSIMCard quote up against it and see whether it is competitive.

Why we hold no eSIMCard price anywhere now

This blank used to be specific to Romania. It no longer is. We carried 78 eSIMCard rows across 31 countries; on 18 August 2026 we read eSIMCard's own pages and found them wrong, and every one of those rows has been withdrawn from the tables and from the cheapest-per-gigabyte ranking.

We could not replace them with the right figures either. eSIMCard prices the same size over the same duration at two or three different amounts, depending on a Standard/Universal toggle, a per-plan speed limit hidden inside each plan's details modal, and carrier sets that vary plan by plan. Our records hold only provider, size, days and price, so any single figure we stored would flatten a throttled plan and a full-speed one into one row. Our eSIMCard page sets out the reasoning.

None of that is a verdict on the shop. eSIMCard has a working checkout, a catalogue far wider than our rows ever showed, and it is the only one of the six sellers here that publishes the host network its plans use — its Japan page names three Japanese operators, where Airalo, Nomad, Saily and Holafly name none anywhere. What we have no read of is its Romania listing, which is why this page still prices the market instead.

What was removed, and why

The old version of this page stated that eSIMCard operated in Romania on Orange and Vodafone, and that hotspot tethering was supported. Neither claim had a source. It then compared eSIMCard against five rivals without quoting a single eSIMCard price — the tell that there was never anything behind the page.

The network sentence is the one worth dwelling on. We hold no read of eSIMCard's Romanian listing, and naming a carrier because other travel eSIMs seem to use it is exactly the error that produced the first draft of this site. A provider that does not publish its host network has not told you which of Orange, Vodafone, Digi or Telekom you will land on, and no third party can tell you either.

The benchmark

Airalo's Romanian plans — sold under the Noroc label at checkout — were read from Airalo's own site on 13 August 2026, and Nomad's from nomadesim.com on 17 August 2026. The Saily and Holafly rows are indicative: carried in our data without a recent check at source, useful for shape, not for quoting.

Read across the table and the market has a clear shape. The entry point is $4, give or take a penny, whoever you buy from. The value improves steeply with size — a gigabyte costs four dollars at the bottom of the ladder and about a dollar at the top. Nomad is the cheapest per gigabyte on capped data, and its prices and Airalo's have both now been read off their own stores. An earlier version of this page said the capped ladder stops at 20GB. It does not: Nomad sells 50GB over 30 days for $45, the cheapest gigabytes in the country.

A rough test: a quote near $9 for 3GB over a month, or near $16 for 10GB, is in the market. Much above $16 for a 10GB month and two providers already beat it.

What to check at an unfamiliar checkout

With no plan data of our own, the sensible questions are structural rather than about price.

When validity starts. Some providers count from purchase, some from first connection. On a 7-day plan bought a week before you fly, the difference is the whole plan.

Whether tethering is allowed. It is not universal in Romania: Holafly's plans here do not permit it. If a laptop or a travelling companion needs to share the connection, get that in writing at checkout.

Whether you can top up. Running out mid-trip on a plan that cannot be extended means buying a second eSIM at the entry-level price, which is the expensive end of the ladder.

Where you are going. Romania's coverage gaps are geographic and no provider escapes them: remote Carpathian trails above about 1,600 metres, the Danube Delta's reed channels away from the villages, and very remote rural settlements in the Moldova region. Cities and main roads are fine.

You may not need any of this

Romania is an EU member, so an EU or EEA home plan should work there at domestic rates under roam-like-at-home. For a lot of European visitors the correct spend on this page is nothing.

If you want a Romanian number, a prepaid SIM from Orange Romania, Vodafone Romania, Digi or Telekom Romania costs around $13 at the airport, and registration requires a passport or ID card. That is more than Airalo's verified $11.00 for 5GB over thirty days, and an eSIM asks for no documents — which is why most short-trip visitors skip the counter.
