Digi Romania SIM card: prepaid options, prices and the eSIM that is not for tourists
Digi's prepaid offers start at 2.50 EUR a month for 100 GB, and it has taken over Telekom's prepaid customers. Its cheap eSIM requires a Romanian CNP.
A Digi Romania SIM card is the cheapest local route on paper, and the least tailored to visitors. Digi's prepaid options start at 2.50 EUR a month, but we found no tourist offer, and its eSIM page asks for a Romanian personal numeric code. We read Digi's pages on 8 October 2026. Digi is also the operator that took over Telekom Romania's prepaid customers.
Which Digi Romania SIM card options exist for prepaid?
Digi's prepaid options page lists these monthly options, with prices that exclude VAT and are charged in lei at the National Bank of Romania rate on the day of top-up:
- National 2.5: 2.50 EUR, unlimited calls and SMS on Digi's network, 300 national minutes, 100 GB of data.
- National 4: 4 EUR, 1,000 national minutes, 150 GB.
- National 5: 5 EUR, unlimited national minutes and SMS, unlimited data slowed to 1 Mbps after 200 GB.
- National 7: 7 EUR, the same with more international minutes in the region.
- Roaming SEE (2.50 EUR) and Roaming Plus (4 EUR) add-ons last 14 days and cover roaming in South-East Europe and neighbouring countries.
The page states 4G speeds up to 150 Mbps down, and 5G up to 600 Mbps down. It gives no price for the SIM card itself, which we could not find.
Can a visitor use the Digi eSIM?
Probably not. The prepaid eSIM page offers "eSIM 2" at a 2 EUR credit with 200 GB for a month, but it is for ages 14 to 25 and the order form asks you to upload an identity document and enter your CNP, the Romanian personal code, plus a Romanian address and a parent or guardian's details. That makes it a poor fit for a tourist. The page itself is inconsistent about the age range (14 to 25 in one place, 14 to 26 in another).
Does a Digi prepaid SIM need a passport?
The pages we read do not say what is needed for the plastic SIM, or whether a passport is accepted. Ask at a Digi shop; do not assume you can buy and use one with no checks.
Digi and Telekom Romania prepaid
Digi announced on 1 October 2025 that it had completed the takeover of Telekom Romania's prepaid mobile business. Telekom prepaid numbers were to be moved to Digi between November 2025 and March 2026. Digi's notice says customers keep their credit and terms at least as favourable. Telekom's own pages, as quoted in a search, put the end of the migration at 7 May 2026; we did not open that notice. If you read an older guide listing a Telekom prepaid SIM for visitors, see our Telekom Romania page.
Digi Romania SIM card coverage
Digi advertises 4G and 5G mobile internet. We did not find a coverage percentage. Our Romania notes call Digi a strong-data, budget option; that is not stated by Digi and we have not verified it. Check Digi's coverage page before you head to mountain areas.
Digi or a travel eSIM?
Digi's price is attractive for a long stay if you can complete the registration. For a short trip, a travel eSIM bought and installed before landing avoids a shop visit. See the Romania comparison, the Romania hub and the cheapest eSIM page. The other networks are Orange Romania, whose PrePay page lists 5 EUR for 250 GB, and Vodafone Romania.
What Digi's pages do not say
The SIM price, the ID rule for visitors, where SIMs are sold, and coverage figures. We have not tested the service.
