Nomad in Romania: ten checked plans and the country's cheapest gigabyte

Nomad sells ten Romania plans. Six carry a fixed allowance, four sell unlimited data by the day.

Every one of those was read from nomadesim.com on 18 August 2026.

An earlier version of this page listed three plans only, and priced them at $7.00 for 3GB rather than $9.00, at $14.00 for 10GB rather than $16.00, and at $22.00 for 20GB rather than $20.00. It also said Nomad sold no 1GB plan, no 5GB plan and no unlimited data in Romania. All of that was wrong: two prices were too low, one was too high, and four of the plans it said did not exist do.

Hotspot tethering is supported, which is worth stating because it is not universal here — Holafly's Romanian plans do not allow it.

That $0.90 at 50GB is the lowest cost per gigabyte in Romania from any provider, unlimited plans included. The ladder is also unusually well behaved: each step up roughly doubles the data for well under double the money.

What it undercuts

Here is the same market at thirty days, which is the only window Nomad sells.

Airalo's column was read from its own site on 13 August 2026 and Nomad's from nomadesim.com on 17 August 2026. Saily's is indicative — held in our dataset without a recent check at source.

The win is real but narrower than this page used to claim, and it is not universal. At 10GB Nomad is two dollars cheaper than Airalo, at 20GB eight dollars cheaper, and at 50GB it is the only seller in the country. At 5GB it loses to Airalo by $1.50, and at 3GB it is a penny behind Saily. It still solves a problem Airalo has, which is that Airalo's 3GB plans in Romania run for three or seven days only, at $7.50 and $8.00, while Nomad's 3GB runs a month.

The gaps, and one useful trick

Nomad's range has holes, and they are worth naming before you get to checkout.

The entry plan is not the cheapest. Nomad's 1GB is $4.50 for seven days, against $3.99 from Saily for the same week and $4.00 from Airalo for three days. Fifty cents, and Saily takes it.

The 5GB tier is beaten. Nomad charges $12.50 and Airalo $11.00 for the same month. If you were about to buy 5GB from Nomad, either take Airalo's or spend $3.50 more on Nomad's 10GB and get twice the data.

Unlimited stops at ten days. Nomad's unlimited runs $11.00, $18.00, $25.00 and $33.00 for three, five, seven and ten days — cheaper than Airalo at every one of those lengths — but there is nothing longer. For a fifteen- or thirty-day unlimited plan you are back to Airalo, at $48.00 and $69.00.

What changed, and what it cost this page

Until now every Nomad figure here was an inherited number rather than a price anyone had read at a checkout, and this page said so. The check has now been done, and the old figures were wrong in both directions — $7.00 against a real $9.00 at 3GB, $14.00 against $16.00 at 10GB, $22.00 against $20.00 at 20GB — with four whole plans missing, including the 50GB one that turns out to be the best value in the country. The recommendation survives at 10GB and 20GB; the claim that Nomad undercuts everyone at every size does not.

An earlier version of this page also recorded Orange and Vodafone against Nomad's Romanian plans. Nomad publishes no host network, in Romania or anywhere else, so that attribution has been removed rather than softened. No travel eSIM lets you pick your host carrier in any case — for that you need a physical local SIM, which costs about $13 at the airport and requires a passport or ID at the counter. Buying an eSIM requires no documents.

Coverage, and whether you need to buy anything

Romania's dead zones do not care which brand you chose: remote Carpathian trails above roughly 1,600 metres, the Danube Delta's reed channels once you are on the water away from the villages, and very remote rural settlements in the Moldova region. Bucharest, Cluj, Brașov, Timișoara and the roads between them are ordinary.

And check your own contract first. Romania is in the EU, so an EU or EEA home plan should work there at domestic rates under roam-like-at-home, in which case the right answer is to buy nothing.

Verdict

For capped data of 10GB or more in Romania, Nomad is the one to buy: $16.00 at 10GB, $20.00 at 20GB and $45.00 at 50GB, the last of which nobody else matches at any price. Its unlimited plans are the cheapest in the country up to ten days. Its weaknesses are the small end, where Saily's $3.99 and Airalo's $11.00 for 5GB both win. The Romania hub has the full comparison.
