Venice: patchy in the alleyways, and offline maps solve it

Signal is better than the stonework suggests

Venice has no cars, no motorcycles, no bicycles and no grid. Its roughly 1,500 alleyways, 400-plus bridges and six sestieri are genuinely disorienting, and getting lost here is less a travel cliche than a near-certainty.

The network copes with all that better than you would expect. San Marco, Rialto, Dorsoduro and Cannaregio all have solid 4G. The Grand Canal has signal along the vaporetto route. Murano and Burano are fine; Torcello is more limited.

The weak spot is specific and slightly cruel: the interior alleyways away from the canals are the inconsistent bit, and they are exactly where you are most likely to need a map.

Which is why the fix is offline, not a bigger plan

Download the Venice map area to your phone before you start wandering. That is the whole solution, and it works from hotel WiFi the night before just as well as it works on live data.

This is worth saying plainly because it changes what you should buy. In a lot of cities the argument for a generous data plan is navigation. In Venice, navigation is the one job that does not need live data at all — the street network sits on your device, and the patchy calli stop mattering.

What still wants a connection

The vaporetto. ACTV and AVM run an app with real-time water bus tracking, and it earns its place: when a vaporetto runs late, the knock-on to a connection at Piazzale Roma or a Murano crossing is the kind of thing you want to see coming rather than discover on the pontoon.

Beyond that it is the usual small stuff — restaurant bookings, museum tickets, messages, photos going home. None of it is heavy.

What to buy

Venice is a small-data city. Most visitors are here two or three nights, using their phone for the vaporetto app, a couple of bookings and photographs, with the map already downloaded. The 1 GB tier genuinely covers that, and the two options at the top of the table are within a penny of each other — pick on duration, not price.

Step up to 3 or 5 GB if Venice is one stop on a longer Italian run rather than the whole trip.

Buying a local SIM instead

You can, but it is more effort than it is worth for a short stay. Italian carriers require a passport or ID to register a prepaid SIM, and our figure for an Italian airport SIM is around $18 — several times the cheapest eSIM. Marco Polo is also across the lagoon from the city, so the counter is not conveniently placed for a change of mind.

If you live in the EU or EEA, ignore all of the above: roam-like-at-home means your domestic plan works in Venice at domestic rates and you should buy nothing.
