Airalo in Italy: good prices we have read, and a coverage claim we withdrew

Every figure below came from Airalo's own Italy listing. Unlike most numbers on this site, none of it is an estimate.

Unlimited runs alongside it: $11 for three days, $17 for five, $23 for seven, $32 for ten, $44 for fifteen and $64 for thirty. Hotspot is supported.

Two things stand out. The 50 GB month at $35 works out at 70 cents a gigabyte, by a distance the cheapest data in our Italy set. And the ladder is properly graded — three days really does cost less than seven, which is not true of every provider here.

Before you buy anything

If your phone plan is from an EU or EEA country, stop. Roam-like-at-home means your domestic allowance works in Italy at domestic rates, and buying an Italian eSIM on top of it is spending money to get less. This page is for travellers from outside the bloc.

If you do buy locally instead, an Italian SIM at an airport counter costs around $18 in our data, and Italy requires a passport or ID document to register it. That is a queue and a form, not a scan of your face at a vending machine, and it is the main practical reason visitors reach for an eSIM here.

Airalo against Saily: the only fair fight

Italy is unusual in our data because two providers have verified prices, so this is the one comparison where both sides of the table have been checked.

From 5 GB upwards Airalo wins on price at every size, by a dollar to three dollars, for identical validity. Below that Saily wins on time: a penny less than Airalo's 1 GB but seven days instead of three, and a dollar and a half more for 3 GB but a month instead of a week.

So the split is clean. Short trip, small allowance: Saily. Anything from a work week upwards: Airalo, and the margin widens as the plan grows.

Against the unverified field, Airalo's $19 for 10 GB sits above an eSIM Go row of $17 that nobody can buy — eSIM Go sells wholesale to resellers and publishes no consumer price — checked on esim-go.com on 18 August 2026, where there is no basket, no checkout and no per-country page — so its rows cannot be bought or ever verified. On unlimited, Airalo undercuts Holafly's indicative pricing at five days ($17 against $19.90) and seven ($23 against $27.90), then loses badly at the long end — $64 against $59.90 for thirty days, and $44 against $39.90 for fifteen.

The Amalfi claim, and why it is gone

This page used to say Airalo's Italy plan gave you a particular Italian carrier's reach along the Amalfi cliff roads, and recommended it on that basis. That is exactly the kind of sentence this site exists to not publish. Airalo does not disclose which Italian network its eSIM connects to — here or in any other country — and we hold nothing on it.

With no network, there is no cliff-road argument. Delete the claim and you have to delete the recommendation built on it, which is why this page now recommends Airalo on price and nothing else.

For context on what we do hold: nothing. This page used to say Holafly's listing pointed to TIM, Vodafone and WindTre; that came from our own data, and Holafly publishes no host carrier for any country — we read its prices for 28 of them off esim.holafly.com on 18 August 2026 and not one names an operator. It has not been confirmed with them, and we would not plan a trip around it. Nomad names no carrier either, in Italy or anywhere — an earlier version of this page said it did.

What is true of Italy generally is that signal thins in the same places whoever you buy from — the Amalfi tunnels and cliff-side villages, the Cinque Terre trail between the villages, remote Dolomite hiking routes, the interior of Calabria and Basilicata, and the smaller Sicilian islands. Those gaps are geography.

Verdict

Buy Airalo in Italy for a trip of a week or more where you want a price you can check and an allowance above 5 GB. The 10 GB month at $19 and the 50 GB month at $35 are the two strongest buys on its Italian shelf.

Look elsewhere for a very small plan, for long-stay unlimited, or if you are an EU resident who does not need to buy at all. The rest of the field is on the Italy hub.
