Naples: simple in the city, and the last easy stop before the coast

The city is the easy part

Coverage is good throughout the historic centre, the port area and Spaccanapoli. Nothing about Naples itself argues for one plan over another, and for a two-day stop in the city you can buy on price alone.

What makes Naples worth its own page is that most people are not stopping in the city. They are using it as the doorway to Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast, and those two have very different connectivity stories.

Pompeii and the Circumvesuviana

Pompeii has good coverage across the archaeological site, which matters because entry is ticketed and digital confirmation is handled on your phone at the gate. You are not going to lose an afternoon to a missing signal there.

The journey is the more useful thing to know about. The Circumvesuviana line from Naples to Pompeii and Sorrento runs to famously irregular schedules, and it is served by an app that gives you live timetables. If you are going to use data for one thing in Campania, that is a strong candidate.

The Amalfi question: you cannot buy a network

Older versions of this page told readers that TIM was essential for the SS163 coast road and pointed at particular eSIMs as the way to get it. That advice does not hold up, for a simple reason: you cannot choose a host network by buying a travel eSIM.

Saily, Airalo, Nomad and Holafly do not publish which Italian network carries their traffic — an earlier version of this page put Nomad in the other group, which was wrong, and did the same with Holafly on the strength of carrier names that came from our own data rather than from Holafly's product pages. eSIM Go has no consumer page at all, and we hold no read of eSIMCard's Italian listing. So there is no plan here you can buy for the network it runs on.

If you specifically want TIM, which has the widest rural reach of the Italian networks, the honest route is a physical TIM SIM bought in Naples before you head south. Naples is also the easiest place on this itinerary to do that: the coast road villages are not where you want to be hunting for a phone shop. Bring a passport, because Italian carriers require ID to register a prepaid SIM.

A city break plus Pompeii is a small-data trip — maps, train times, a ticket QR code. The 1 GB week at $3.99 covers it. A wider Campania loop taking in Sorrento, Capri and the coast leans harder on navigation and ferry apps, and 5 GB is the more comfortable shape. Landing at Naples

An Italian airport SIM runs about $18 in our data, roughly four times the cheapest eSIM, and the ID paperwork means it is a counter queue rather than a quick grab. Capodichino sits unusually close to the city, so the counter is not even buying you much convenience — you can be in the centre in twenty minutes and deal with it there, or arrive already connected.
