Data on the Amalfi Coast: better than the road suggests

Why this stretch of coast needs data more than most

The SS163 is one of Italy's most demanding driving routes: a narrow cliff road shared with full-size coaches, where a wrong turn is not a minor inconvenience. Almost everyone drives it with Google Maps or Waze running the whole way. Parking in Positano is app-managed. The ferries linking Amalfi, Positano, Capri and Sorrento publish their timetables through operator apps such as Alilauro and NLG, and those timetables change with the weather.

So the practical question here is not whether data is nice to have. It is whether you will be able to reach a schedule or a map at the moment you need one.

What the signal is actually like

Better than the geography implies. The clifftop line of the SS163 keeps line-of-sight to the masts, and coverage along it holds up. Positano, Amalfi and Ravello all have good 4G and 5G.

The pattern is consistent: the coast road is fine, the inland and upland ground behind it is not. If you are walking the Path of the Gods, download the route before you start rather than relying on live navigation at the top.

There is nowhere on the coast to buy a SIM

This is the single most useful local fact on this page. There are no carrier stores along the Amalfi Coast itself. If you want a local Italian SIM, buy it in Naples before you head south — and expect to show a passport, because Italian carriers require ID for registration.

That constraint is what makes an eSIM unusually sensible here. You buy it before you travel, it activates on landing at Naples, and you never have to find a shop in a village where the main street is a staircase.

A week of navigation, ferry apps and messaging is a low-single-digit gigabyte trip for most people. Season changes the answer

The SS163 is often closed in winter after storms, which turns a routine drive into a long inland detour — exactly when you want a working phone. In June to August the road is congested with tourist coaches; drive it early in the morning or take the SITA bus. Positano's summer crowds are extreme at peak, and that concentration of phones is felt on the network in the middle of the day.

None of that changes which eSIM to buy. It does change how much you will lean on it.
