Florence: uniform coverage, and tickets you cannot buy on the door

If you live in the EU, buy nothing

Start here, because it saves a good share of readers the rest of the page. Italy is in the EU, so roam-like-at-home applies: an EU or EEA SIM works in Florence at your domestic rate and out of your domestic allowance. Nothing to buy, nothing to install, no decision to make. Everyone else — UK travellers, where the position varies by operator since Brexit, and anyone from further afield — read on.

Coverage: nothing to report, and that is the report

Florence is small enough to cross on foot in an hour, and the coverage is uniform across it. The Duomo, the Uffizi district, Piazza della Repubblica, the Oltrarno and Piazzale Michelangelo are all fine on any carrier. There is no metro to lose signal in, no long tunnel, and no known dead zone in the historic centre.

We do not hold a Florence-specific speed measurement, and would rather say so than repeat the national average as though somebody had measured it here. What we can say is that no coverage problem in the centre has been reported to us, and the city is too compact to produce an interesting one.

The Biblioteca Nazionale has free wifi, and the ATAF app handles the city buses — though in a city this size walking usually wins anyway.

What data is actually for in Florence

The reason a Florence trip leans on a working phone is not navigation. It is that almost everything worth seeing runs on advance tickets.

• The Uffizi — the queue without an advance booking can run 90 minutes.
• The Accademia, for Michelangelo's David — timed entry.
• The Vasari Corridor, when it is accessible — by appointment.
• Boboli Gardens — ticketed.

None of that is heavy on data. Booking pages, a wallet app and a few QR codes cost almost nothing. It is simply the thing you cannot do without a connection, and the failure mode is losing a morning rather than losing a signal.

Chianti is where it thins out

The Chianti wine country starts about 45 minutes south by car, and the main roads carry 4G. The remote vineyard routes — the winding lanes that are the entire reason to drive out there — have intermittent signal.
